BMI's Vice President of Film/TV Relations, Doreen Ringer Ross, will moderate a composer "Coffee Talk" at the Los Angeles Film Festival on Sunday, June 20. The "Coffee Talk" will feature BMI composers Danny Elfman (Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Men in Black) and Thomas Newman (Finding Nemo, American Beauty, Erin Brockovich) at the Director's Guild of America Atrium (7920 Sunset Blvd.) from 3 pm to 5 pm. Admission is $20 and tickets can be purchased at 1-866-FILMFEST or at LAFilmFest.com.

Danny Elfman

Thomas Newman

Ringer Ross will focus the conversation on the two composers' thoughts on film music - from working with directors to the creative muse - as well as amusing anecdotes from their careers. The informal talk is part of the Los Angeles Film Festival's "Coffee Talks" program featuring filmmakers in a relaxed setting. Considered two of the most influential composers in film and television music today, Elfman and Newman will each bring a unique perspective to working with independent filmmakers as well as the many commercial properties in their credits.
A highly prolific and influential musician, Elfman carries dual notoriety: that as a highly respected and revered composer and as the lead singer of seminal Southern California rock band Oingo Boingo. Elfman entered the world of film music in 1985, when director Tim Burton and star Paul Reubens called him to write the music for Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. His other credits include Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Big Fish, Hulk, Men In Black, Men In Black II, Planet of the Apes, Proof of Life, Spy Kids, Good Will Hunting, Mars Attacks!, Mission: Impossible, Dead Presidents, To Die For, Dolores Claiborne, Black Beauty, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, The Simpsons, as well as songs for such diverse films as Ghostbusters 2, Weird Science and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Elfman won a Golden Globe for his score for The Nightmare Before Christmas, a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition for the theme to Batman and three Saturn Awards for Best Score for Spider-Man, Mars Attacks! and The Nightmare Before Christmas. He is a three-time Academy Award nominee, and has also earned various Grammy, Emmy and BAFTA nominations.
Newman, a six-time Oscar nominee and BAFTA, Emmy and Grammy award winner, has scored such films as Finding Nemo, Road To Perdition, In The Bedroom, White Oleander, Six Feet Under, The Shawshank Redemption, The Horse Whisperer, The Player, Little Women, Fried Green Tomatoes, American Beauty, The Green Mile and many others. The youngest son of legendary composer Alfred Newman, Thomas studied composition and orchestration at USC, completing his academic work at Yale. He scored his first film, Reckless, at the age of 29, and his reputation for originality and for intensifying mood and character grew with his work starting with such films as Gung Ho, Scent Of A Woman and Citizen Cohn, continuing up to his current work on Finding Nemo and the upcoming Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Cinderella Man.
Both Elfman and Newman are past recipients of the BMI Richard Kirk Award for Outstanding Achievement.
As Vice President, Film/TV Relations, Los Angeles, Ringer Ross oversees all activity from the Los Angeles based department serving film and television composers. During her tenure at BMI, she has established many programs for film and television composers, including the Earle Hagen Film Scoring Workshop, The Sundance Institute's Composer's Lab and the BMI Conducting Workshop. She also oversees the BMI Film Scoring scholarships at USC, UCLA and Berklee School of Music, and sponsorship involvement with the Sundance Film Festival, Independent Feature Film Market, Independent Feature Project-West, Independent Feature Project-Midwest and the SXSW Film Festival.
Ringer Ross works closely with BMI's many other celebrated film and television composers, including the late Michael Kamen, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Dave Grusin, John Barry, Mike Post, W.G.
David Arnold’s Scores Boost Bond Films

British composer David Arnold, whose music adorns the new James Bond film Die Another Day, counts himself among the luckiest musicians in the world: Every two years, he gets to score the exploits of the world's most famous spy.

The trouble is, it gets more and more difficult. "I felt that I did everything I wanted to on Tomorrow Never Dies," he says at the end of a long day of mixing the music at London's Air Lyndhurst studios. "When I looked at The World Is Not Enough, I was back at the bottom of the mountain looking up at the top again. You've got to get up there, but you can't take the same route as you went last time.

"Now on Die Another Day, I'm back down at the bottom of the mountain again. It's trying to avoid, to a certain extent, what you've done before, but not abandoning it completely."

Arnold is the eighth composer to write music for Bond movies but only the second to score more than one. John Barry, who established the Bond sound with such classic scores as Goldfinger and Thunderball, had done 11 before leaving the series. Arnold has inherited the mantle, bringing the sound of 007 into contemporary musical terms while "trying to maintain the spirit of what John did. I think his shadow looms large over the whole thing."

Arnold, 40, is that rare breed of film composer who understands both the value of the traditional orchestra and the high-tech world inhabited by most rock and pop artists. On Tomorrow Never Dies, the score was mostly orchestral; on The World Is Not Enough, it leaned heavily toward the electronic. "This is an extension of both of those," Arnold says.

The locales of the films are a major influence on musical choices. In the new adventure, Bond (Pierce Brosnan) visits both Korea and Cuba, so Arnold accompanies him with the native sounds of both countries. "It's good to share the responsibility for some of the rhythmic propulsion with ethnic-based instruments, rather than completely electronic," he notes.

Arnold won a Grammy for his massive score for the blockbuster Independence Day and counts among his other early successes the music for the sci-fi film Stargate and the fantasy Godzilla.

He does a lot more than just Bond these days. Within the past two years he has also penned the music for a wide-ranging slate that includes Samuel L. Jackson's Shaft remake, the swashbuckling The Musketeer, the Ben Stiller comedy Zoolander, the Jennifer Lopez thriller Enough and the acclaimed Ben Affleck drama Changing Lanes. Up next for Arnold: the music for The Fast and the Furious 2 with John Singleton, with whom he worked on Shaft and Baby Boy.

Summer on the Silver Screen: Sounds Like a Hit

<dc:subject>Artists, Arnold, David, Burnett, T-Bone, Clinton, George S., Edelman, Randy, Elfman, Danny, Goldsmith, Jerry, Julyan, David, Lopez, Jennifer, Mansfield, David M., Newman, David, Newman, Thomas, Musical Styles, Film-TV, Musicworld, Feature</dc:subject>

Going to the movies this summer? Of course you are. A good deal of the music you'll be hearing has been written and recorded by BMI composers.

Leading the pack are two veterans, Danny Elfman and John Williams, who, between them, have scored four of what are expected to be the biggest-grossing movies of the season.

Elfman, this year's Richard Kirk Award winner for career achievement in film and TV music, is riding the crest of success with a mammoth opening for Spider-Man, the big-screen adaptation of the Marvel Comics classic. Over the July 4th weekend, fans will be treated to his new music for Men in Black 2, the sequel to the 1997 blockbuster that brought Elfman an Oscar nomination for Best Comedy Score.

Williams, a five-time Oscar winner, returns with music for his two favorite collaborators: Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. Lucas's Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones marks his fifth score in the legendary "Star Wars" canon, while Spielberg's Minority Report, a Tom Cruise action vehicle, reaches theaters June 21.

Another action-movie veteran and fellow Oscar winner, Jerry Goldsmith, is represented this summer by the new Jack Ryan thriller The Sum of All Fears, due over the Memorial Day weekend. British composer David Arnold - who will be back with his third James Bond thriller, Die Another Day, at Christmastime - has written the music for the latest Jennifer Lopez film, Enough.

David and Thomas Newman, the film-scoring nephews of longtime 20th Century-Fox music chief Lionel Newman - himself an early champion of BMI - have three more movies out this summer. Tom Newman already has out the dark drama The Salton Sea, and will be reunited with his American Beauty collaborator, director Sam Mendes, on the Tom Hanks drama Road to Perdition, due in July. David Newman, who has often worked in animation, returns to that genre in June with the live-action/animation combo Scooby-Doo.

T-Bone Burnett, fresh from his Grammy victory for the soundtrack of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, is collaborating with David Mansfield (Heaven's Gate) on the highly anticipated Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, based on the popular Rebecca Wells novels, also in June.

On the comedic front, look for the latest Adam Sandler movie, Mr. Deeds, with music by Teddy Castellucci, in June, and a third installment of the Austin Powers series, Goldmember, with the usual clever spy music from George S. Clinton, in July.

Newcomer David Julyan has scored the Al Pacino-Robin Williams thriller Insomnia, due in late May. Edward Shearmur, the British composer whose Charlie's Angels and Wings of the Dove scores have helped to put him on the American movie-music map, has scored the post-apocalyptic dragon thriller Reign of Fire, due in July. August will bring XXX, a new film from the Fast and Furious duo of director Rob Cohen and star Vin Diesel, with music by the always-reliable Randy Edelman.

Thomas Newman Named Richard Kirk Award Recipient for Outstanding Career Achievement

BMI last night honored the composers and songwriters of the music in the top-grossing films of the year and the top-rated prime-time network television shows at its annual Film & Television Awards dinner. Held at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, the black tie gala was hosted by BMI President and CEO Frances W. Preston. More than 52 awards were given out during the ceremonies.

The highlight of the evening was the prestigious Richard Kirk Award, which was presented to composer Thomas Newman in recognition for Outstanding Career Achievement. Newman, a four time Oscar nominee and BAFTA award winner, has scored such films as The Shawshank Redemption, The Horse Whisperer, The Player, Little Women, Fried Green Tomatoes, American Beauty, The Green Mile, Phenomenon, American Buffalo, The People Vs Larry Flynt, Oscar and Lucinda, and many others. The youngest son of legendary composer Alfred Newman, Thomas studied composition and orchestration at USC, completing his academic work at Yale. He scored his first film, Reckless, at the age of 29, and his reputation for originality and for intensifying mood and character grew with his work on such films as Gung Ho, Scent Of A Woman, Citizen Cohn and many others.

Directors Frank Darabont (The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption) and Jon Avnet (Fried Green Tomatoes, George of the Jungle) sent video messages congratulating him on his award. Darabont said, "Tom's music has added an enormous amount to both The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. He is a quote 'storyteller' and that's what he views his job as - which is wonderful. He manages to elicit an enormous amount of the emotional content of the filmwithout being obvious. He gives you something a little unexpected but yet you're in tears by the end of it. He's quite brilliant that way."

Avnet described Newman as, "Basically my voice on a certain level." Described as an open, collaborative and devoted composer who brings his small children to the conducting stand at times, Avnet said, "He creates a kind of visceral situation whereby you're able to experience the narrative - you won't see in Tom's music a lot of stings and hits and 'look at me.' Instead, you'll see a kind of airy weave that allows you to feel what's going on. He doesn't point, and that's part of what I like about his work. "

Composers receiving multiple Film Music Awards for their work included Newman for The Green Mile, American Beauty and Erin Brockovich; and Jerry Goldsmith for The Haunting and The Mummy.

BMI Composers who received Film Music Awards included John Williams for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace; George S.
