Mambo Master Cachao Dead at 89

      <dc:subject>Cachao, Coral, Palmieri, Eddie, Latin</dc:subject>

Israel Cachao López — the legendary Cuban composer, songwriter and bassist known simply as “Cachao” — died March 22 at age 89 in Coral Gables, Florida. Cachao is revered as the pioneer of the mambo, the genre created in the late 1930s that became the bedrock of modern Cuban music, salsa, and the Latin-influenced genres of rock and r&b.

Born in 1918, Cachao’s 80-year career began in the silent movie era as he accompanied pianists in movie theaters in his native Havana. At 13, he became the bassist of the Havana Philharmonic, a position he held for 30 years. Simultaneously, with his brother Orestes, he played in a succession of dance orchestras and smaller ensembles as the duo wrote thousands of songs in the traditional Cuban styles of charanga and danzón. Slowing their frenetic rhythms to create an infectious and danceable style, they created their first mambo in 1937, a genre that ultimately packed dance floors worldwide. In Havana, Cachao assembled jam sessions — descargas — where recordings by Cachao y Su Ritmo Caliente became the foundation of salsa.

In 1962, Cachao moved to Spain before migrating to New York City to work with bands including those under the leadership of Tito Rodríguez and Eddie Palmieri. He relocated to Las Vegas, then to Florida where, in 1990, actor/director Andy Garcia organized recording sessions with leading Cuban musicians and a tribute concert for the Grammy-winning Master Sessions Volume I; Master Sessions Volume II and the concert filmed for a documentary, Cachao, Como Su Ritmo No Hay Dos. Garcia went on to produce two more albums with Cachao, Cuba Linda and the 2004 Grammy-winning Ahora Sí.

Honored with a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, at the time of his death Cachao was planning recording sessions and a European tour. A documentary, Cachao, Ahora Sí, is set for release next month.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of Latin music's greats,” said Delia Orjuela, BMI Assistant Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations, Latin. “A true icon, Cachao’s music crossed many borders, languages and generations. As the creator of the mambo and one of the greatest bassists of the 20th century, he will remain one of music's greatest architects and ambassadors.”

The Distillers

<dc:subject>Artists, Coral, Distillers, The, Musical Styles, Rock, Musicworld, Hitmaker</dc:subject>

The Distillers are out to rescue rock & roll, and its fans from the blahs. The band — singer/guitarist Brody Dalle, drummer Andy Granelle, bassist Ryan Sinn and guitarist Tony Bradley — is far from the musical politeness of pop. They barge around with meaty, gritty rock music, growling themes and not-so-subtle reminders of when rock was not only a little dangerous, but a lot fun.

The band’s third album, Coral Fang, is chock filled with punk-rock angst and credibility. Coral Fang was produced by Gil Norton (who earned his stripes with the Pixies) and walks the difficult line between hard-core and palatable-to-the-masses radio fare. Songs like “Here To Know” and “Deathsex” are driving, arrhythmic and messy — the very definition of what punk rock is supposed to be, but these days rarely is. Those songs are also buried way down in the album’s sequencing.

It is the upfront tunes however, such as “Drain the Blood” and “Die on a Rope” that channel the band toward greatness. Remincent of Hole, the songs — like The Distillers — are driven, angry and ultimately accessible.

Dalle is an Aussie who arrived in Los Angeles as a teenager, and still envisions herself as the ultimate outsider. She might be appalled, but The Distillers could just be the band to refresh the stale state of rock & roll for everyone. After all, it’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it, and The Distillers are up for the challenge.

The story of Regional Mexican group Los Tucanes De Tijuana began in Sinaloa, Mexico 12 years ago, when songwriter and lead singer Mario Quintero, Joel Higuera, Mario Moreno and David Servin joined forces and relocated to Tijuana.

Since then, the band has enjoyed huge success in the Latin market with six different releases simultaneously on the Billboard Latin 50 chart. In 1998, songwriter Quintero was named Composer of the Year at the Furia Musical Awards in Mexico City, and he received four BMI Latin Awards at this year's ceremony in Coral Gables, Florida.

According to Quintero, the key to the success of Los Tucanes de Tijuana is their metaphoric style and use of corridos (short stories from the north of Mexico that rhyme and describe the controversial and sometimes dangerous way people confront day-to-day situations.) This unique style is what sets them apart in the genre of Mexican music.

They have performed in Spain and Chile and have received an overwhelmingly positive response. Their latest release on EMI Latin, Los Más Buscados (Most Wanted), secured the number one spot on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks, Regional Mexican and Latin sales charts.

With these significant accomplishments, Los Tucanes De Tijuana is sure to further enhance the Regional Mexican genre.
