<dc:subject>Fleming, David, Carpenter, Pete, Post, Mike, Film-TV</dc:subject>

Composer David Fleming, along with previously touted honoree Bryan Senti, was selected as the 2007 recipient of the 19th Annual BMI Foundation Pete Carpenter Fellowship. BMI Foundation President Ralph N. Jackson originally announced the winners in May 2007, but due to the recent writers' strike, Fleming's visit and award presentation was postponed until this year. The Fellowship is open to aspiring film and television composers under the age of 35 and was established by the BMI Foundation and Carpenter's family, colleagues and friends in honor of the late composer, whose credits include such television themes and scores as The A-Team,Magnum P.I., The Rockford Files, Hardcastle and McCormick, Hunter and Riptide.

Fellowship winners are given the opportunity to intern with renowned BMI composer Mike Post in his Los Angeles studio and meet with other distinguished theatrical, film and TV composers. Post, Carpenter's longtime writing partner, has penned some of the most memorable theme songs in television history, including Hill Street Blues, The A-Team, Magnum P.I., NYPD Blue, Law and Order, L.A. Law, The Rockford Files, Quantum Leap and City of Angels. A stipend for travel and living expenses is also part of the award.

David Fleming first became involved in composition during his high school years in upstate New York. While writing a piece for a friend's video project he realized he had a particular interest in scoring to visual. After high school, David was accepted into the Studio Composition program at the music conservatory at Purchase College, where he recently finished his junior year. At school he has concentrated on composing for film and television with Emmy award-winning composer Allyson Bellink. This past year he also earned an internship at Eargoo, a Manhattan-based company that specializes in original music, sound design and general post-production for commercials. Outside of school and work, David enjoys recording and performing with his band, The Locomotive Espada.

The BMI Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation founded in 1985 to support the creation, performance, and study of music through awards, scholarships, commissions and grants. Tax-deductible donations to the Foundation come primarily from songwriters, composers and publishers, BMI employees and members of the public with a special interest in music. Because both the Foundation staff and the distinguished members of the Advisory Panel serve without compensation, more than 97% of all donations and income are used for charitable grants.

John Kaefer has been hailed by critics and audiences for his imaginative scores for film and television, as well as for his creativity as a composer of chamber, choral and orchestral concert works. He has composed, produced and orchestrated music for numerous film and network/cable television projects, including Room Service (starring Howie Mandel and debuting at Sundance), To Kill A Bore (shown at Cannes) and Dance School (documentary), among others. Additionally, Kaefer serves as the Creative Director and a principal composer for DreamArtists Studios, a film/television music production house based in New York.
California native James Woodward began writing music in Wisconsin. A string bassist and pianist, he studied composition with Stephen Hartke, Ronald Foster and John Downey. His music has been performed by the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, the USC Symphony Orchestra, the United States Army Orchestra, and many other ensembles across the United States and Europe. Woodward recently completed writing the music for a short film by Gentry Smith, is performing for various films and projects in the Los Angeles area, and finds any available moment away from writing and performing to surf off the Southern California coast.

BMI is once again an anchor sponsor of the annual Sundance Institute Composers Lab, which marks its seventh year beginning July 20 and runs until August 4 in Sundance, Utah. BMI's Doreen Ringer Ross, Vice President of Film/TV Relations, returns as a founding advisor.
This year's lab features Composers Lab Fellows Peter Fitzpatrick, Aiko Fukushima, Joseph Julian Gonzalez, Gary Louris, Raz Mesinai and Frank Macchia. During the two-week lab, fellows participate in workshops and creative exercises under the guidance of leading film composers and film music professionals. The Composers Lab participants also collaborate with filmmakers from the Sundance Institute's Feature Film Program to explore the process of writing music for film and to create accompanying scores for scenes shot by the Filmmaker Fellows during the Institute's Filmmakers Lab.

The Composers Lab is a major component of the Sundance Institute Film Music Program, which is dedicated to supporting emerging film composers and enhancing the role of music in independent film. First offered from 1986-1989, the Composers Lab was re-introduced in the summer of 1998 to provide a collaborative and supportive environment in which composers can experiment and expand their musical language. The Composers Lab provides valuable first-hand experience in composing for film and enhances the musical understanding of independent filmmakers participating in the Sundance Institute Feature Film Program.

"This is a program that we've always been involved with - from its inception to its reintroduction in 1998," said Ringer Ross. "By supporting and educating composers who have unique and independent vision, we're helping to foster a new community of original and important music. By pairing it with the Directors and Producers labs at the Institute, we're able to build relationships and understanding of the creative process and help both sides understand the process behind each art."

"Music is a crucial and often overlooked part of the filmmaking process," explains Peter Golub, Director, Sundance Institute Film Music Program. "This Lab provides a unique opportunity for emerging composers and directors to work together in an atmosphere that encourages experimentation. Interest in this program continues to grow and this year's fellows represent an extraordinary level of accomplishment and range of musical experience. We're very excited about the work we'll be doing with them and the impact we have on the fellows in the Filmmakers Lab."

In addition to their work with the Filmmakers Lab Fellows, Composers Lab participants will work under the mentorship of a distinguished group of composers, film composers, filmmakers and film industry professionals.
