Nicol: Official Bio

<dc:subject>Nicol, Crow, Sheryl, John, Elton, Morrison, Van, Nicks, Stevie, Folk, Pop, On The Scene</dc:subject>

Nicol’s softly spoken, humble approach and innocent ‘bedroom eyes’ paints a rather misleading picture. Sometimes shy, but often quirky and with lots to say; what you get from Nicol is a mind blowing vocal delivery, so powerful and precise, it’s hard to understand where it all comes from.

Raised in Encino, California in the late 1980’s, American music has left an indelible mark on Nicol and still remains a major influence on her classic pop/folk sound today.

Although the idea of living in sunny California appeals, especially while window gazing out into a vacuum of grey misery and classic British drizzle, Nicol explains a series of large earthquakes and subsequent minor injuries paved the way, at least in part, for a transatlantic move to London with the family during her early teenage years. Nicol’s geographic history has undoubtedly contributed to a unique Anglo-American blend.

N: ‘some people say to me, hey…you’ve got a posh English speaking voice, so what’s with the west coast sound dude? Well…musically, I take a lot of inspiration from the States but there are loads of British bands I adore too. I love artists like Stevie Nicks, Carol King, Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow….but I also listen to The Police, Elton John, Imogen Heap, Bowie...For me it’s all about great songs…it doesn’t matter where they hail from. Anyway, I did grow up in LA’.

So off to Blighty she went and it has to be said, English boarding schools.....a daunting prospect for anyone! However, the handy music room facilities did not go unnoticed. In fact Nicol spent the best part of her early teenage years working on intelligent melodies and insightful lyrics, some of which would later feature among a repertoire of timeless compositions….the kind Joni Mitchell would surely be proud of.

N: ‘I just felt there’s no better way to express myself. I wanted to write my own songs. I’ve never played covers. Even as a classically trained pianist, I would play a little Mozart and by the end of the session…the Dictaphone would be out, ready for my new ideas’.

Neither a scholarship offer from Saint Martins College of Art, nor an invitation to study at the Sylvia Young Theatre School could tempt Nicol away from her singing and writing. Maybe it’s just in the blood. Nicol’s uncle (formerly the guitarist in Johnny Kid and The Pirates) has toured with the likes of Van Morrison, Brian Ferry and Sir Paul McCartney.

Having recently completed numerous studio recordings, Nicol explains she is now ready to release her music to the world for the first time.

N: ‘You can’t hide forever; I just feel the time is right for people to get a chance to hear what I’m all about. I’m ready to get undressed and expose myself’.
‘How Does It Feel Now’, ‘Everybody Knows’, ‘Fall Down’, ‘Hayley’ and ‘Love’ are arguably the pick of the bunch, although Nicol is quick to confirm there is plenty more to come.
A spiritual person, Nicol strongly believes in a ‘higher power’ and her own psychic ability. This ‘darker side’ leaves one curious to find out more, yet her endearing and charming honesty inspires a sense of optimism and satisfaction.
Nicol is simply pop music at its best and most sophisticated.

Sarah Tollerson: Bio

      <dc:subject>Tollerson, Sarah, Crow, Sheryl</dc:subject>

Sarah Tollerson, a singer/songwriter and Georgia native who has been compared to artists such as Sheryl Crow, learned guitar from her father while she was still in middle school and it's been sweet music ever since. After receiving overwhelming response from the performance of her first original song at age 15, Sarah knew that the stage was where she belonged. During her brief stay as a general music major at the University of Georgia, Sarah took on a band, fondly known among their fans as "The Big Fantastic." Despite the band's tremendous success in Georgia, in 2006 Sarah made the decision to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston to focus her studies on contemporary songwriting. She continues to turn heads in her captivating live performances and in August 2007 independently released her debut full length album, "Keeping Old Love Letters," with her band. The road ahead looks promising for budding star Sarah Tollerson.

BMI affiliates staked claim to the majority of the 2008 Academy of Country Music award nominations announced Tuesday, March 4 in Nashville. Reigning Top Female Vocalist Carrie Underwood helped announce the nominees live during CBS' The Early Show broadcast, which also featured live performances by BMI's Rodney Atkins and Miranda Lambert.

Sugarland

Rodney Atkins nailed the capstone on his red-letter year by receiving six nominations, including Top Male Vocalist, Album and Song of the Year. One of the feel-good stories of 2007, Atkins saw his ACM-nominated project If You're Going Through Hell achieve platinum status. After toiling in Nashville for 10 years in relatively ambiguity, the universally loved honky tonker's hard-earned recognition and fan-driven success slapped smiles on faces all over Music Row.

Miranda Lambert

Duos Big & Rich and Sugarland each scored four nods. Charismatic and eclectic, Big & Rich earned recognition in the prestigious Top Vocal Duo category and Single, Song and Video of the Year for the poignant ballad "Lost in this Moment." Big Kenny landed an additional two nominations for his producing credits. Sugarland underscored their staying power with a Top Vocal Duo nod as well; the pair's stirringly original tune "Stay" became one of the industry's buzz songs, earning nominations for Single Record, Song and Video of the Year. Member Kristian Bush also earned recognition for his production of the tune.

Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift snagged three nods each. Critical darling Lambert's nominations for Top Female Vocalist, Album and Single Record of the Year reflect both the growth of her audience and creativity. Country's favorite wunderkind Taylor Swift's nominations reflect the strength of her year: nods in both Top Female Vocalist and Top New Female Vocalist reiterate the breakout strength of her year.

BMI affiliates swept both the Top Vocal Duo and Top New Male Vocalist categories. Duo nominees include Brooks & Dunn, Halfway to Hazard and Montgomery Gentry; Luke Bryan, Jack Ingram and Jake Owen will vie for the Top New Male Vocalist prize.

Additional BMI nominees include Keith Urban for Entertainer of the Year and Top Male Vocalist; Rascal Flatts, also for Entertainer of the Year plus Top Vocal Group; Martina McBride and Carrie Underwood for Top Female Vocalist; Diamond Rio, the Eagles and Little Big Town for Top Vocal Group; Sarah Buxton for Top New Female Vocalist; Lady Antebellum and The Wreckers for Top New Duo Vocal Group; Gary Allan and his latest no. 1 single "Watching Airplanes" for Single Record of the Year; producers Tony Brown, Mark Wright, Nathan Chapman, Scott Borchetta, John Hobbs, Justin Niebank and Byron Gallimore; songwriters Rodney Clawson and Keith Anderson for co-penning Big & Rich's "Lost in this Moment"; as well as Tim McGraw, Vince Gill and Sheryl Crow in the Vocal Event of the Year category.

Call her a phenomenon-a wunderkind-but leave "newcomer" monikers behind when attempting to describe country superstar Carrie Underwood. BMI's Underwood took home three trophies at the Academy of Country Music Awards Tuesday night in Las Vegas for Top Female Vocalist, Album and Video of the Year. The wins officially recognized Carrie Underwood's substantial contributions to the country music format and her unfaltering momentum.

The new artist categories were reserved for BMI singer/songwriters as well, albeit the respected winners are far from "new" to most listeners. Critic and fan favorite Miranda Lambert earned a Top New Female Vocalist win, while hard-working Rodney Atkins claimed the Top New Male Vocalist crown-10 years after signing his first record deal. Harmony-drenched quartet Little Big Town secured Top New Duo or Vocal Group honors as well.

Perennial favorites Brooks & Dunn won four awards including Top Vocal Duo and Vocal Event of the Year for "Building Bridges." The song featured fellow BMI members Sheryl Crow and Vince Gill, and both Ronnie Dunn and Kix Brooks also received nods for their work as producers. Brooks & Dunn now hold the record for most Top Vocal Duo wins with 14. In recognition of their numerous charitable endeavors, the duo was also presented with the Home Depot Humanitarian of the Year honor.

Both Song and Single Record of the Year went to "Give It Away," produced by BMI affiliate Tony Brown and co-written by BMI songwriters Whisperin' Bill Anderson and Jamey Johnson. The staunchly honky tonk tune was a No. 1 hit for recent Country Music Hall of Fame inductee George Strait, and it earned the first ACM award for Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry member Bill Anderson.

Megastars Rascal Flatts took home Top Vocal Group honors. The group recently saw their single "Stand" hit No. 1 and were also named Billboard's top-selling act for 2006. Their fifth ACM Top Vocal Group win ties them with Country Music Hall of Famers Alabama for the most consecutive wins in this category.

BMI legends swept the prestigious Pioneer and International Award categories. Peerless songwriter Harlan Howard, American treasure Dolly Parton and rebel icon Waylon Jennings were each honored with Pioneer Awards, while the academy bestowed the International Award on Bakersfield sound architect Buck Owens.

The Academy of Country Music, an artist and industry-driven organization, exists to produce a world-class network television awards show, and its associated events, to provide the financial resources to ensure the on-going philanthropic work of its Charitable Fund. Academy of Country Music Charitable Fund promotes and supports music education and humanitarian programs that transform the human spirit. Through its charitable donations, the ACMCF works towards two main goals: encouraging Learning Through Music and Healing Through Music. The Academy, which is comprised of more than 4,500 professional members and more than 48,000 associate members, was established in 1964 and is headquartered in Encino, Calif.

<dc:subject>3 Doors Down, Bee Gees, The, Branch, Michelle, Brown, James, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Crow, Sheryl, Foo Fighters, Gibb, Maurice, Gibb, Robin, Haggard, Merle, Kelly, R., Lennon, John, Lil Jon, Linkin Park, Maroon 5, Nickelback, Parton, Dolly, Santana, Carlos, Simon, Paul, Williams, Pharrell, Wilson, Brian, Pop</dc:subject>

BMI will recognize the Bee Gees as BMI Icons at its 55th annual Pop Awards, to be held Tuesday, May 15 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles. Hosted by BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and BMI Vice President & General Manager, Writer/Publisher Relations, Los Angeles, Barbara Cane, the invitation-only event will also honor the songwriters and publishers of the past year’s top songs. The evening will culminate with an all-star musical tribute to the Bee Gees.

BMI Icons are selected because of their “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.” The Bee Gees join an elite list that includes Crosby, Stills & Nash, Paul Simon, Merle Haggard, Brian Wilson, James Brown, Carlos Santana and Dolly Parton, to name just a few.

Collectively, Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb boast 109 BMI Pop, Country and Latin Awards. Barry received four BMI Songwriter of the Year awards; Robin shared two of these with him. The trio claims four BMI Song of the Year wins for “Night Fever,” “Too Much Heaven” and the Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton duet “Islands in the Stream,” which won in both the pop and country categories. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members have earned international industry accolades, including the prestigious Grammy “Legend” Award. Maurice Gibb’s passing in 2003 led to the Gibbs’ decision to cease performing as the Bee Gees, but their music lives on, enriching generation after generation.

In addition to the Icon, BMI will recognize Song, Songwriter and Publisher of the Year during the evening, along with the recipient of the BMI Foundation’s John Lennon Scholarship. Pop Award winners from previous years include Maroon 5, R.

Brooks & Dunn emphasized their perennial honky tonkin’ dominance with an exclamation point when the 2007 Academy of Country Music Award nominees were announced Monday, March 5. The longtime BMI affiliates snagged seven nominations, with an eighth nod tacked on to Ronnie Dunn‘s list for his role as a producer. The duo has been honored by the Academy more than any other artist, receiving nominations this year for Entertainer, Top Vocal Duo and Album of the Year.

Country music sensation and last year’s Top New Female Vocalist Carrie Underwood carried her streak of success into 2007, bagging five nominations, including Top Female Vocalist, Album and Single of the Year.

Singer/songwriter Miranda Lambert autonomously bridges the gap between newbees and veterans, snagging nominations in both Top New Female Vocalist and Top Female Vocalist of the Year categories. Jason Aldean earned two nods as well for his hit “Amarillo Sky.” Little Big Town, The Wreckers and Rodney Atkins also landed two nominations each.
