The 13th Annual Hog's Breath Key West Songwriters Festival looms enticingly on the horizon. Presented by Cherry Heart Music and proudly supported by charter sponsor BMI, the event is slated for April 30 through May 4 in Key West, Florida. The festival revolves around five days and nights of more than 20 free shows, staged at an array of the island's most popular drinking holes and hot spots. Informal adaptations of Nashville's signature in-the-round acoustic showcases dominate much of the schedule, while this year, a street concert Saturday, May 3 featuring the Jeffrey Steele Band and Robert Earl Keen adds a Mardis Gras fillip to the mix.

Country Hitmakers Make Music for a Good Cause in the Caribbean

BMI songwriters and artists hopped a few islands and sang more than a few songs Jan. 13 and 14 during the 3rd Annual Country in the Caribbean.

Anguilla hosted two nights of intimate acoustic shows attended by native islanders and tourists alike, featuring sets by Grammy Award winner and 2006 BMI Country Songwriter of the Year Vicky McGehee ("All Jacked Up"), along with Wendell Mobley (“Fast Cars and Freedom”), Chuck Jones ("Cadillac Ranch"), James Slater ("In My Daughter’s Eyes"), Chuck Cannon ("How Do You Like Me Now") and Rivers Rutherford (“When I Get Where I’m Going”), along with three-time Grammy nominee Pat Green (“Wave on Wave”), for.

All proceeds from the event help local children in Anguilla head to college in the United States. So far, four students have paid their tuition with funds generated by the Festival, and the success of this year’s run promises more dollars for the education of Anguilla’s youth.

Live country music drops anchor in Anguilla this month as top notch
Music City songwriters head south for the <a href=

Country in the Caribbean Music Festival being held Jan. 13-14.
Grammy Award-winning and 2006 BMI Country
Songwriter of the Year Vicky McGehee ("All Jacked Up"), Wendell
Mobley ("Fast Cars and Freedom"),
Chuck Jones ("Cadillac Ranch"), James Slater ("In My Daughter's Eyes"),
Chuck Cannon ("How Do You Like Me Now") and Rivers Rutherford ("When I Get Where I'm Going"), along with
three-time Grammy nominee Pat Green ("Wave
on Wave"), will take part in unique live performances to benefit
local children's charities in Anguilla.

The two-night musical smorgasbord kicks off on Saturday, Jan. 13 on
private island Scilly Cay, only 150 yards off Anguilla's island harbor.
Local artists will join Nashville hitmakers for an intimate, eclectic
performance of country music hits paired with Anguilla's native sounds.
Sunday, Jan. 14 brings Texas favorite Pat Green to the island's
legendary Dune Preserve for a rare, acoustic performance.

All proceeds from Country in the Caribbean events will go towards
furthering the education of the island's children. Four local students
have already earned full scholarships to attend universities in the
United States, thanks to funds generated by Country in the Caribbean
alone.

GAC's Country Music Across America will be on hand to cover the
festivities. Executive Producer Greg Travis explains, "Anguilla is a
magical island with wonderful people and they have welcomed the
Nashville music community with open arms. It is a great getaway for the
artists and songwriters to create and relax, as well as for fans to see
intimate performances on some of the world's most beautiful beaches."

Tickets are still available to see Pat Green and Nashville's
award-winning songwriters jam in this unique and intimate paradise
setting. Log on to <a href= "http://www.countryinthecaribbean.com/"

Wendell Mobley

<dc:subject>Artists, Alabama, Mobley, Wendell, Rascal Flatts, Musical Styles, Country, Musicworld, Hitmaker</dc:subject>

Hit songwriter Wendell Mobley has always been different. A singer/songwriter’s move to Music City usually necessitates a rent-paying job outside the realm of creativity: Flipping burgers, mowing lawns and delivering refrigerators fill empty stomachs. Wendell simply “played guitar.”

Mobley moved to Nashville from Celina, Ohio, after cutting his teeth with his own band locally. “The band I was in was just cutting songs I wrote,” Mobley recalls. “Other local bands started recording my stuff. I remember hearing one of my songs on the local radio, and thinking, ‘Yeah. I can do this’.” He pauses and laughs. “I got to Nashville, and, of course, wasn’t quite ready.”

In addition to debunking starving artist clichés, Mobley’s first jobs in town contradict his modest claim. “I was new in town and needed to eat,” Wendell remembers. “I auditioned to play guitar with Jack Green, and that was it.”

Wendell played with the Grand Ole Opry legend for about a year. Songwriting ambitions pulsed through the multi-talented artist, but writing full-time eluded him. Mobley took the job playing guitar for supergroup Alabama, and the longtime fan lists that time with the Country Music Hall of Famers as a highlight in his bright career.

Cuts by Joe Diffie and Kenny Rogers intensified writing’s pull on Wendell, and home beckoned. Mobley left the road, adopted songwriting as his day job, and never looked back.

Hits like Rascal Flatts’ “I Melt” and “Fast Cars and Freedom,” along with Kenny Chesney’s “How Forever Feels,” merely skim the surface of Wendell’s work. Few songwriters experience the thrill of penning a number one hit — Mobley’s hits have roosted atop the charts for a staggering two months at a time. “It’s so tough to even get something cut these days,” Wendell acknowledges. “It feels pretty good watching a song sit at number one for seven or eight weeks,” he chuckles. “Yeah, I’m looking forward to that happening a lot more.”

Key West Songwriters Fest a Rousing Success

The 11th annual Key West Songwriter Festival exceeded expectations and cemented its status May 3-7 as a must-attend event for Nashville songwriters. Sixty BMI songwriters and artists performed and mingled during a week's worth of intimate performances and group activities. Hit songwriter Wendell Mobley took advantage of the week's ample pleasures and views the festival as therapy: "The new AA... Advil and Aloe Vera," Mobley joked.

The group arrives in Key West. Pictured are: Front row (l to r): Wendell Mobley, Kylie Sackley, Virginia Davis, Jenn Schott, Melissa Pierce, Frank Myers, Vickie McGehee, Amber White, BMI's Bradley Collins, Cliff Cody; Back row (l to r): BMI's Mark Mason, Philip White, Fred Wilhelm, James Dean Hicks, Natalie Howard, Patrick Davis, Lee Brice, Brian Davis, BMI's Charlie Feldman and Eddy Raven. (Photo by Alan Mayor)

The festival also saw its first wedding this year, as songwriters D. Vincent Williams and Melinda Hutchings tied the knot while friends and peers looked on and wished them well.
The Key West Songwriter Festival is the brain child of Hog's Breath Saloon general manager Charlie Baur, and has grown from a weekend's worth of shows for the locals into a week-long extravaganza featuring many of the hottest writers in the country. BMI's inaugural role began in the festival's infancy and has ripened into that of devoted supporter and sponsor. The number of BMI affiliates in attendance continues to grow each year as coveted slots multiply through the addition of nearby venues. "This has become a vital event for Music Row," BMI's Mark Mason reflected. "Really, it has the feel and significance of a SXSW for songwriters."

Hog's Breath Saloon's recently opened listening room hosted various combinations of songwriters throughout the festival. "This was my first time at the festival. It was one of the most delightful experiences of my musical life -- a whirlwind immersion in a tropical Oz populated with amazing, hard-partying songwriters," he mused.
During the first week of May, it's highly possible that not a single hit song will be written in Nashville; that week, the hits will instead pour out of a more tropical songwriting oasis as the Key West Songwriters' Festival invades Key West, Fla., May 3-7, 2006. The festival continues its successful run at the world-famous Hog's Breath Saloon, the rowdy home base for festivities.

Jeffrey Steele

Scotty Emerick

Tim Nichols

Each spring, top Music City tunesmiths, emerging talent and country fans from all over the globe gather to enjoy the event's intimate performance settings and soak up the sun.
