The Raconteurs

<dc:subject>Raconteurs, The, White Stripes, The, White, Jack, Rock, BMI Europe, Hitmaker</dc:subject>

Webster’s defines a “raconteur” as “one who excels at telling anecdotes.” Or in other words, a storyteller. Anyone who knows Jack White’s prodigious talents as a songwriter with The White Stripes would agree that he’s one of contemporary rock’s mightiest musical storytellers (as well as a premier stylist, guitarist and bandleader). Pair him with another notable songwriter and artist, White’s old Detroit pal Brendan Benson, then add bassist Jack Lawrence and drummer Patrick Keeler — both from the Cincinnati band The Greenhornes — and you have The Raconteurs, one of the hottest new wrinkles within the modern rock scene.

The new group began when White and Benson got together one hot summer day and wrote and recorded the song “Steady, As She Goes” at Benson’s East Grand Studio (which was, in fact, the attic of his home). Fired by what they created, the two joined forces with Lawrence and Keeler — whose band had been produced by Benson — to record a full album of Benson/White compositions whenever they had time amidst all their other activities.

“We just went in and wrote songs and recorded immediately,” says White of their creative approach. Even though inspiration drove the project, the process of getting 10 songs down took a good year. But finally, in May 2006, the foursome released their debut album as The Raconteurs, Broken Boy Soldiers.

The disc hit No. 7 on the U.S. charts and No. 2 in the U.K., powered by the success of its first single, the seminal “Steady, As She Goes,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. Hitting the road to appear at festivals like Lollapalooza as well as at clubs, the group that calls itself “a new band made up of old friends” quickly became a star attraction.

What at first glance may have looked like a one-off side project now seems destined to take its place alongside its members’ other pursuits. The band has relocated to Nashville and is writing and recording new material. But even after a hit album and the better part of a year on the road, The Raconteurs remain a work in progress. “The band is just changing so much,” says White. “We’re really trying to figure out what we are.”

BMI Sponsors Stage at Lollapalooza

Lollapalooza has found a home in Chicago's Grant Park. August 4-6 marked
the festival's second year there, featuring a commodious setting and
harmoniously diverse line-up that resulted in a decidedly successful
event with broad appeal. With an average of 60,000 music lovers
attending each day, Lollapalooza 2006 offered a slew of daily musical
options, from tot-friendly Kidzapalooza to eight other genre-bending
stages, including BMI's stage, which reflected the festival's diversity
and boasted three days' worth of up-and-coming bands from all over the
country.

Hometown favorites frequented the BMI stage, from Friday's kick-off with

Windy City acts Cameron McGill and What Army, Musical Outfits, Kill

well-each a testament to the town's rich artistic backdrop. The four
corners of the country were also well-represented, thanks to Houston's
Makeshifte, San Francisco's Kelley Stoltz, Indiana's Jon McLaughlin,

"Lollapalooza is the perfect platform to underscore BMI's commitment to
the best new music," says New York Writer/Publisher VP Charlie Feldman.

The Raconteurs: Steady, As They Go

<dc:subject>Raconteurs, The, White, Jack, Rock, On The Scene</dc:subject>

The Raconteurs are a new band made up of old friends, consisting of Jack Lawrence (bass), Patrick Keeler (drums), Brendan Benson (guitars, vocals, keys) and Jack White (guitars, vocals, keys). The seed was sown in an attic in the middle of a hot summer when friends Jack White and Brendan Benson got together and wrote a song that truly inspired them. This song was “Steady, As She Goes” and the inspiration led to the creation of a full band with the addition of Lawrence and Keeler. While each of these four individuals have had successful careers with their own bands, the culmination of all of their talents is what truly makes The Raconteurs a force to be reckoned with.

The quartet convened at Benson’s East Grand Studio to lay down the basic tracks for Broken Boy Soldiers. Work would continue whenever the boys could get together over the next year. Finally, the album has found a window for its release in May of 2006. The band is now, for its members, all consuming and they now present themselves to be....consumed, or at best simply heard.

From the ready-made, radio-friendly quality built into songs like “Steady, As She Goes,” to the explosive tenacity of “Store Bought Bones,” all the way down to the “hits the cockles of your heart” lullabies that encompass the full-length recording, The Raconteurs are more than capable of conquering any genre challenge or tale that they encounter. After all, a raconteur is, by definition, a deft storyteller. And now a new story is unfolding.

Remember a time

When all was not fine

And up from the dingy sewers

Came four lousy thieves

Who flourished like trees

Behold The Raconteurs.....

The Raconteurs released their debut album Broken Boy Soldiers through Third Man Records/V2 Records on May 16, 2006. The album features 10 songs, including the debut single “Steady, As She Goes.”

Broken Boy Soldiers track list in full:

Steady, As She Goes

Broken Boy Soldier

Intimate Secretary

Together

Level

Store Bought Bones

Yellow Sun

Call It A Day

Blue Veins

All songs recorded at Le Grande Studios in Detroit by Matthew Kettle and Brendan Benson. Mixed by Jack White at Ardent Studios, Memphis. Produced by Jack White and Brendan Benson.

The Raconteurs enjoyed a sold out tour of the U.K. in March. Their debut U.S. show at New York City’s Irving Plaza in April will be followed by shows at the Henry Fonda Theater in Los Angeles on June 7, European festival dates and a performance at The Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago’s Grant Park on July 4.
