Presenting acts from the U.S. and abroad, BMI will showcase an array of rising rock, pop and singer/songwriter acts. From the blues rock of the Isle of Man’s Back Door Slam, to the power rock trio of Inward Eye, infectiousness of Bang Bang Bang and John Paul White’s rhythmic guitar, BMI’s Lollapalooza stage is guaranteed to satisfy all musical tastes.

Friday, August 3
11:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. - The Switches: Hailing from London, England, the Switches debut album, Heart Tuned To D.E.A.D, is influenced by artists such as David Bowie, The Rakes, Super Furry Animals, and the Beach Boys.

12:30 – 1:15 p.m. - Tom Schraeder: With a delicate, drunken honesty and a knack for setting the simple desperation of young love against a background of Brit-pop-laced Americana, Tom Schraeder’s songs for his upcoming album, The Door, are not for the faint of heart.

1:45 – 2:30 p.m. - Bang Bang Bang: With influences like The Sex Pistols and Lenny Kravitz, Bang Bang Bang inked a record deal with Warner Brothers after dazzling them with their irresistible, infectious brand of greasy, sleazy Southern rock, spiked liberally with punk energy and songwriting smarts.

3:00 – 3:45 p.m. - Powerspace: This young quartet specialize in a cross between hooky power pop à la Fountains of Wayne, ironic glam metal in the tradition of the Darkness, and '80s-influenced dance-rock textures that recall early MTV stars like INXS and Duran Duran.

4:15 – 5:00 p.m. - Inward Eye: With a nod to the Jam and the Who, this rock trio from Winnipeg, Canada write and perform songs with the wit and guitar-based energy that have won them a global audience.

5:30 – 6:15 p.m. - Wax on Radio: Chicago' s Wax On Radio has emerged at the forefront of a new breed of important young rock bands. 11:15 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Dear and the Headlights: Rock band Dear and the Headlights, calls Phoenix, Arizona home and consists of five members influenced by artists such as Radiohead, Bob Dylan, The Flaming Lips, and Leonard Cohen.

12:30 – 1:15 - Ludo: Critics embraced their second album, The Broken Bride, as “a rock and roll adventure for the ages” and “a competitor for the best EP of the year.”

1:45-2:30 - Kevin Michael: With an irresistible blend of soul, funk, r&b and pop, Kevin Michael invokes greats from the past while bringing something totally new to the game on his debut album, YaDig?

3:00 – 3:45 - Lady GaGa: Lady GaGa’s debut album combines her love of Beatles’ melodies with retro dance beats, plastic synth sounds, and a quirky rock piano style. Her dramatic live shows have won over fans and critics in her hometown of New York City.

4:15-5:00 - Cage the Elephant: Bowling Green, Kentucky’s Cage the Elephant formed in 2006, debuting their self-released album this past March. With a strong buzz off of their SXSW and Bonnaroo performances, the band is winning indie rock fans over with their no-frills,  no-boundaries performances.

5:30 – 6:15 - Back Door Slam: This blues-rock trio from the Isle of Man has made jaws drop when 19-year-old singer Davy Knowles showcases his exceptional blues-rock guitar skills and vocals, showing that the passion and heart of the blues is evolving outside the U.S.

11:15 – 12:00 - The Graduate: After their debut album, Anhedonia, hit stores this past April, The Graduate has gained momentum due to memorable songs, an interactive live show and the friendly disposition of its members.

12:30 – 1:15 - Mr. North: This four-piece band, comprising two brothers, a first cousin and a next-door neighbor, started playing together when they were young teens. Their second album, Fear and Desire, showcases the bands’ powerful live sound.

1:45 – 2:30 - Smoosh: the first true rock Tween act to come from the indie scene, Smoosh offers a rare combination of honesty, perseverance, and passion for music.

3:00 – 3:45 - The Diffs: Inspired by early L.A. punk bands like The Germs, Black Flag and the Adolescents, the Diffs go back to the source and make the sound their own. The LA Weekly hails The Diffs as “L.A.’s coolest high-school band.”

BMI's "See It Hear First" showcase will feature the Rosewood Thieves, a New York City rock group whose EP, From The Decker House, was written in the small valley town of Deposit, N.Y. Their songs hark back to the classicality of acts such as the Band and Bob Dylan. The six picturesque songs on the EP are entwined with the stripped-down fundamentals of rock and roll and the sensuality of r&b. Country music's bleeding heart is the final straw that completes the Rosewood Thieves honest-to-goodness presentation. Signed to V2 Records, their music reflects the world around them.

Also performing is World of O.T.I.S., a band that's hard to describe. It's like trying to describe an emotion. It's happy, it's sad, it's carefree, it's raw. It's the whimsical nature of the Flaming Lips, mixed with the melancholy of Coldplay. They convey what they believe: Life isn't always easy, but don't take it too seriously. This past summer, the group played on the weekends in New York's Washington Square Park in Greenwhich Village where they would wheel out an acoustic 64-key piano and a small jazz drum kit. Over the course of three months, the duo sold almost 3000 CDs.

God or Julie
Manhattan's God or Julie embraces the blues both emotively and musically. Members Jon Paul, Adam and Aaron were sneaking into New York City blues clubs while still in high school and moved on to absorb bands like Stone Temple Pilots and Silverchair only after "trading licks and downing shots with blues players "four times our age." After adding Marc Slutsky on drums, the three friends became four, and the group's brand of emotionally charged rock struck a chord with listeners. Pianist/vocalist Jesse Gage and drummer Craig Myer form the Brooklyn duo O.T.I.S. The band itself is made up of Jesse Gage (piano and vocals) and Craig Myer (drums).  Jesse was raised by a hippy mom in London and then Cape Cod, Massachusetts.  He began playing classical piano at age 7 and took lessons until age 14.  Craig, who was born and raised in New Jersey, comes from a long line of drummers.  His grandfather, father and older brother were all drummers.  The man was born with rhythm. 

Jesse hooked up with Craig about two and a half years ago in New York City.  When they met, Jesse was playing piano in the local clubs with an old record player as accompaniment.  The two added bass and a guitarist and spent about a year and a half playing as a four piece.  And then last summer, Craig and Jesse began playing on the weekends in Washington Square Park in Greenwhich Village.  They would wheel out an acoustic 64 key piano and a small jazz drum kit.  Over the course of 3 months, the duo sold thousands of cd’s while playing weekends in the park. 

Recently, the band began working with producer Tony Bruno and lawyer Nick Ferrara and became affiliated with BMI.  They reassembled the four piece set up, and are in the process of getting ready to cut a full length record.

The journey from Norman, to well, Norman (they’ve remained in Oklahoma) has been an e-ticket ride. Coyle is a serious, almost intellectual artist whose inner Adam Sandler takes over when things get heavy. Case in point is 1993’s Transmission from the Satellite Heart. By then the Lips’ noisy pseudo-psychedelic pop, layered with delightful melodies and often bizarre lyrics, had earned them a core following who could only nod their heads and smirk when the rest of the world finally joined in the giggles and weirdness of the huge hit, “She Likes Jelly.”

Naturally, 1997’s follow-up, the four-disc set Zaireeka, came out of left field. The album is unique, even in the world of performance art concept albums: Each CD features music blasting from a boom box with the band behind it. The discs are designed to be played and heard simultaneously. It’s brilliant yet demanding for new fans brought to the band by the lite-pop “She Likes Jelly.”

The band’s 1999 outing was another genius change of direction. Sort of. The Soft Bulletin features the Lips’ trademark psychedelic noise and weird twisted lyrics layered under bed of lush orchestral pop.

Which brings us to the present. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots is an outstanding album (who knew electronica could be warm, fuzzy, dark and funny). Additionally the Flaming Lips, always a favorite among fellow thinking musicians, are getting a little more mainstream attention; they are spending this fall serving as the opening and backing band for like-minded artist/performance genius Beck. Nominees were announced today (1/7) at a press conference at New York's Madison Square Garden. The 45th Grammy Awards will be held on February 23 at the Garden, and will be broadcast live on CBS from 8-11:30 (ET/PT).

Other BMI writers who received multiple nominations included four each for country darlings the Dixie Chicks, producer Arif Mardin and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger (including Record of the Year for the Nickelback smash "How You Remind Me"). Newcomer Vanessa Carlton picked up three. Fellow BMI pop divas Pink, Britney Spears and Michelle Branch garnered two nominations each, as did blues legend B.B. King, film composer Thomas Newman and gospel giant Fred Hammond.
