Josh Groban

<dc:subject>Five For Fighting, Foster, David, Groban, Josh, Hancock, Herbie, Ondrasik, John, Pop, Hitmaker</dc:subject>

Some artists have to pay dues for many years before gaining recognition. Josh Groban is not one of them. While he was still in high school at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, he caught the attention of Grammy-winning producer David Foster. His self-titled debut CD, produced by Foster, went double-platinum and gained him a place on the international music scene when he was just 20 years old.

Five years and several hit albums later, he continues to increase his reputation as an international singing star and songsmith. With his latest studio release, Awake, Groban is breaking new ground for himself. “The goal was to put music on the new album that was stylistically different from a lot of things that I’ve done,” he commented in a recent interview.

Inspired by a trip to South Africa, he wrote “Lullaby” with South African native Dave Matthews, featuring the harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Herbie Hancock is on hand to help create the subtle, understated funk of “Machine,” a collaboration with Eric Mouquet and Dave Bassett.

There is also plenty on the album to satisfy fans of Groban’s classic ballad style, such as the beautiful “February Song,” for which he shares writer credits with John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting and Marius De Vries. Groban relates how the song was born one sleepless night: “I walked over to the piano and it just came to me in the most magical way.”

Having achieved success so early, Josh Groban seems committed to discovering all he is capable of. “I feel that we’re in an exciting time when people are ready to accept all sorts of music,” he avers. “I owe it to the crazy success that has happened [to me] not to rest on it — and go where it thrills me.”

Seizing stardom like it was his birthright, a teenaged Josh Groban sauntered onto the global Stage in 2001 with a self-titled debut album so mature it sounded like the defining work of a much older man. In the few years since his auspicious debut, Groban has cut three hit albums, headlined a popular PBS special, made several star-making television appearances and placed three #1 hits on the Adult Contemporary charts. Yet despite the demands of his spiraling fame, Groban seemed almost thoroughly unfazed. He was a Digital Age Cary Grant — unassumingly sexy, continental charm oozing from every pore.

Groban’s flirtation with destiny continues on his latest album, Closer . The album sprinted to the Top 10 just months after its release, earning multi-platinum status and spawning the AC hit “You Raise Me Up.” Juxtaposing pop gems like “Remember When It Rains” with Eurocentric tracks like “Oceano” and “Il Postino,” Groban’s new album has brought the singer “Closer” to household word status.

Discovered by veteran record producer David Foster, Groban began his ascent after a last-minute appearance as a stand-in for Andrea Bocelli at the 1999 Grammy Awards dress rehearsal. His duet with Celine Dion won the attention of several influential fans, including Grammy host Rosie O’Donnell. Subsequent performances and appearances on O’Donnell’s talk show, the “Ally McBeal” TV series and the 2002 Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony cemented Groban’s reputation as a unique talent in contemporary music.

Groban has since become a television mainstay, appearing on “Good Morning America,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “The Today Show” and “The Tonight Show,” not to mention a bravura performance at Super Bowl 2004. PBS anointed the singer with his own “Great Performances” special, which the network has used to promote its crucial pledge drives. The special, which spawned the CD/DVD package Josh Groban in Concert , documents the remarkable genesis of a superstar career in the making.

John Keane

<dc:subject>Artists, Foster, David, Keane, Keane, John M., Musical Styles, Film-TV, Musicworld, Hitmaker</dc:subject>

Though “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” has been an enormous hit almost from the moment it premiered in 2000, John M. Keane, composer of the CBS drama’s score, has scarcely had time to rest on his laurels. “It’s this juggernaut moving forward at an incredible pace,” he attests. “I’m writing 25 minutes of original music each week, and we’re coming up on 90 episodes. It seems like it’s gone by so fast.”

Keane calls much of what he composes for the program “process music.” “The little ticking motors and electronic engine sounds have become a hallmark of the show,” he notes. “They represent the science, the compiling and examination of evidence. So much of ‘CSI’ is not dialogue-driven — it’s ‘show and not tell’ — which gives me an opportunity to drive the scene with music and create a feeling of revelation.”

Before signing on to the #1-rated show, Keane teamed with “CSI” producers Cindy Chvatal and William Petersen on their independent feature film Hard Promises , for which he wrote the main title theme, and the TNT film Keep The Change . Among his other television credits are the main title theme for “The Amazing Race” (CBS), as well as music for “Martial Law” (CBS) and “The Sentinel” (CBS/UPN).

Then there was Keane’s primetime TV variety series, in which he starred with his brother Tommy. As it happens, Keane began his music career at the age of 11. The Keane Brothers released four albums, the first of which, 1976’s The Keane Brothers, was overseen by producer David Foster.
Asked about future musical goals, Keane says he’d like to work in an orchestral setting, but for now, he’s perfectly content. “‘CSI’ has proven to be a great show, and I think it deserves the kind of recognition it’s gotten. I’m just happy to be part of it.”

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the BMI Richard Kirk Award for Outstanding Career Achievement to composer/artist Mark Mothersbaugh. Named after late BMI Vice President Richard Kirk, the prestigious award is given annually to the composer who has made significant contributions to film and TV music. Former recipients of the award include John Barry, Randy Edelman, Danny Elfman, Charlie Fox, Jerry Goldsmith, Earle Hagen, Michael Kamen, Alan Menken, Thomas Newman, Mike Post, Lalo Schifrin, Alan Silvestri, Richard and Robert Sherman, W.G. An artist both musically and in the literal definition, Mothersbaugh has created an aural framework with his scores for the forthcoming films Lords of Dogtown and The Life Aquatic, as well as having scored the hugely successful Rugrats television, stage and film franchise. He has also scored a diverse array of films and television shows, including Thirteen, The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, 200 Cigarettes, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Happy Gilmore, The Mind of the Married Man, Power Puff Girls, Pee Wee's Playhouse, Beakman's World and more. With over 100 credits in the medium including over 400 commercial credits, Mothersbaugh is also co-owner of Mutato Muzika, an umbrella company that is home to a full-time staff of composers and music editors.

Korn

At the dinner, Mothersbaugh was honored by some of the directors he's worked with, as well as by the characters from Rugrats. Director Wes Anderson (Bottle Rocket, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic) called Mothersbaugh a "conceptual artist...his studio is kind of like Andy Warhol's factory. He's very versatile, his mind is constantly spinning and coming up with different things, and he's not locked into any one direction. He's more interested in trying everything."
"What Mark brings to my movies that's the most important to me has to do with the tone to them," said Anderson. "He's drawn to something - his sense of humor and a sort of wistfulness to him - that is the right kind of chemistry for my movies. It fixes the oddness of the movies and mixes into it something that has to be just right, and somehow he knows where that needs to fall."
Director Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown) said she was a fan of Motherbaugh's work and wanted him to score her directorial debut Thirteen but was afraid he might not want to do the low-budget film. "I just tried to think of things that would get him excited about doing it," she said. Describing a scene in the movie that she thought would appeal to his creative side, she said she asked him, "Mark would you be interested in creating the sound of brain cells popping?"
Hardwicke went on to describe Mothersbaugh as, "Quirky, crazy, super imaginative, super creative...you don't know what the answer will be and that's the fun of it. He will surprise you with something you didn't plan on, or didn't anticipate. That's what I like, I want to be surprised," she said. "He wants to make it work and delight you too. He gets into a character's head and understands that words can be too heavy handed. I think his music helps carry us places and makes us feel things."
Other top winners at the BMI Film & Television Awards included legendary composer Mike Post, who received the most nods with three for Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, and Law & Order: CI. Also feted were double winning composers Don Davis for The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, David Newman for Daddy Day Care and The Cat In The Hat, Theodore Shapiro for Along Came Polly and Starsky & Hutch, Rolfe Kent for Freaky Friday and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, Teddy Castellucci for Anger Management and 50 First Dates, Pete Townshend for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and CSI: Miami, and Rob Cairns for The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.
BMI also honored the composers of the highest-ranking cable television shows of the year, including Butch Hartman and Guy Moon for Fairly Oddparents and Danny Phantom, Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh for All Grown Up, Stewart Copeland for The Amanda Show, Douglas Cuomo for Sex and the City, and Brian S.
peermusic Celebrates 75th Anniversary
by Gerry Wood

Although the company name, peermusic, eschews capitalization for an underplayed lower case style, this firm deserves headline-sized capitals for its impact on the international music scene. Launched as Southern Music in 1928 by Ralph S. Peer, famed for finding seminal talents in neglected genres and markets, the independent publishing company has hit the mile marker of 75 successful years -- and counting.

Ralph Peer II with Roni Stoneman, Janette Carter, June Carter Cash and Patsy Stoneman

On a 1927 safari for songs, Peer ventured from New York City into the southland, scouting artists for the Victor label. He found blues, jazz and country. In Bristol, Tennessee, he recorded the first sessions for the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers while gaining valuable copyrights. South of the border trips led to the explosion of the Latin American market, thriving to this day with such peermusic standards as "Perfidia," "Brasil," "Granada" and multiple Latin Grammys and BMI Latin Publisher of the Year titles.

Peer's penchant for discovering diverse, often-overlooked creators preceded a quantum leap in that area in 1939 when BMI was formed, a blessing for writers and publishers on the fringes of mainstream music. Peer's philosophy fit perfectly with the new performing rights organization.
Later acquisitions and talent development in Europe added to its stature, but not at the expense of foretelling U.S. trends, as the company signed Buddy Holly and other rock & roll pioneers.
After Peer died in 1960, his wife Monique led the company for the next 20 years before their son Ralph Peer II expanded the family tradition of exploring new opportunities.
"We have to be very conscious of respect for the roots of music and at the same time work very hard to keep ourselves contemporary," he explains. "By being players in the contemporary music markets around the world, we do the best job of serving our repertoire and the composers and heirs of the repertoire."
Keeping abreast of technological advances is a key to success, stresses Peer, who presides over a global operation with 32 offices in 27 countries, and an immense catalog of some 300,000 songs. "It was the technology of the Victrola that really spearheaded my father's introduction of country music to a broader public. And I've always been very proud of the fact that he was involved in the first recordings of black people singing the blues. He knew there were genres of music and audiences that weren't being fulfilled out there."
Kevin Lamb, Vice President in charge of the Nashville office, succinctly observes, "While everybody zigged, Ralph Peer was zagging."
The zagging has resulted in a catalog that has yielded hits for such artists as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Celine Dion, Nat King Cole, Hank Williams, Rod Stewart, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, Edith Piaf and Julio Iglesias. Among the company's songwriters are producer/writer David Foster, Grammy-winning new age artist Kitaro, BMI multi-award winner Stewart Harris and Shelly Peiken, who has crafted compositions for Christina Aguilera and Meredith Brooks.
Beyond the airwaves and record sales, peermusic spices TV series, commercials and movies. O Brother, Where Art Thou? featured six of its songs on the soundtrack, selling more than six million copies in the U.S. alone -- the best-selling country soundtrack in history.
Providing gems for the hottest chart-topping acts from rock to Latin while mining gold and platinum from the catalog prods peermusic into the forefront as a modern day publishing giant. Significantly, the O Brother evergreens were a back-to-the-future gift from the copyright collage assembled by Ralph S. Peer when he made that historic trip to Tennessee. His son saluted the achievement, hosting a private dinner in Bristol commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Bristol sessions, with invitations sent to all the living relatives of the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers and the Stonemans.
"It's not often that you get 75 years of relationships between a publishing company and its composers and heirs," Peer points out. "It was that relationship that we were celebrating and holding up as a standard which we strive to attain."
