Rick Derringer

<dc:subject>Artists, Derringer, Rick, Kenny G, Musical Styles, Country, Jazz, Rock, Musicworld, Hitmaker</dc:subject>

Free Ride, Rick Derringer’s most recent creative endeavor, is a smooth jazz album sure to surprise and entice the classic-rock fans of the ’60s rock group The McCoy’s, for which Derringer is more frequently recognized.

Commonly remembered for 1965’s anthemic “Hang on Sloopy,” Derringer’s latest single, “Hot & Cool,” confidently explores new melodious terrain and continues to ensure Derringer’s place in musical history.

Including such transformed tracks as “Frankenstein” and “Free Ride,” both number one Edgar Winter hits during the 1970s, Derringer’s latest album also includes three original tracks co-written with his wife, Brenda Hall. In addition, the album contains two ballads that feature Derringer’s lead vocals.

“I grew up listening to and playing jazz as a kid and a teenager and I’ve always wanted to make a jazz record. But I was typecast as a rock and roll guy so I never had the opportunity before,” Derringer explained recently.

As a former rock star and author of the 1974 vintage rock staple, “Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo,” Derringer’s latest rendition, titled “Jazzy Koo,” replaces intense strings with tranquil chords and soulful melodies.

While lyrics like “Rock-n-Roll, Hootchie Koo. Lawdy mama light my fuse,” may seem out of place alongside Kenny G and other smooth jazz stalwarts, radio stations across the country have enthusiastically welcomed Derringer into the realm of jazz music. Not too bad for a former rock star who previously toured with such acts as Aerosmith, Led Zepplin, Jimmy Hendrix and the Rolling Stones.

Once again, Derringer proves he can still light that fuse, albeit this time with a soulful twist.

Country fans should enjoy Dolly Parton's "I'll Be Home With Bells On," and Ray Stevens' "Santa Claus Is Watching You." For truly alternative music, how about "Head Crushing Yuletide Sing Along" by Mojo Nixon?

These are a few of the 4.5 million songs licensed for public performance by BMI, a music performing rights organization representing 250,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers from around the world. More than half the music performed publicly in the United States is licensed by BMI, a non-profit making organization that has reciprocal agreements with similar groups in 60 countries.

"We can give a company permission to perform all of our 4.5 million songs all year long with a single agreement," said Tom Annastas, BMI Vice President, General Licensing. Annastas encourages businesses that have questions about music licensing to call BMI toll-free at 1-800-925-8451. Getting permission from composers to perform their songs can be easier and cheaper than buying door prizes for your party.

BMI's repertoire also has plenty of songs for other holiday occasions, such as Hanukah and Kwanzaa. There are nearly 3,000 songs licensed by BMI that begin with the word "Hanukah" (under various spellings), so if you want to listen to a little jazz by candlelight, "Chanukah Song" co-written and performed by Kenny G might work. BMI has about a dozen songs that begin with the word "Kwanzaa," and many more with the name of the African-American celebration elsewhere in the title.

No Christmas party would be worth its eggnog without festive music, but oversight by persons planning music for business festivities could diminish the season for some hard-pressed songwriters. Failing to obtain copyright clearance for the music used at a company party may not evoke comparisons to Ebenezer Scrooge, but, if left uncorrected, the mistake could cause embarrassment and unnecessary expense for your organization.

"Bah! Humbug!" you say? Read on.

The Better Business Bureau, in its brochure, "Music for the Marketplace," says that before you perform music in public, whether by live recordings, recordings, or broadcasts, you must get permission from copyright owners. "Public" performances are very broadly construed under the law and are defined as performing "at a place open to the public or at any place where a substantial number of persons outside of a normal circle of a family and its social acquaintances is gathered." The BBB says, "This has been interpreted to mean that most performances at so-called private clubs and fraternal organizations are 'public' under copyright law."

Annastas said some people think all BMI songwriters are rich and famous, and don't really need music performance royalties -- but "those are the exception," he explained. "Most songwriters work hard behind the scenes to provide great music for others to record and sing. The average BMI songwriter earns less than $5,000 per year from public performances of their music, and even less from the sale of records and sheet music," Annastas said.

Kenny G Has Time on his Side

Twenty years is a lifetime in the music industry. Many acts whither and die by their third album; even the Beatles lasted less than a decade. It’s all the more impressive, then, that Kenny G enters his third decade as a solo artist as a bona fide household name. He is the best-selling instrumentalist of all time, with over 70 million records sold, whose trademark sax sound is instantly identifiable.

After years spent honing his skills in his hometown of Seattle, Kenny Gorelick played his first professional gig at the ripe old age of 17 with Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra. Studying accountancy at the University of Washington by day, at night Kenny played with many of the headliners passing through Seattle, including Johnny Mathis, the Spinners and Liberace. He played with a local funk group — Cold, Bold & Together — before joining Jeff Lorber’s jazz-fusion band in 1979.

It was during his tenure with Lorber that then-Arista Records president Clive Davis first heard Kenny. In 1982, the label released Kenny G, his first album as a solo act, and soon Kenny, along with acts such as Grover Washington Jr. and Al Jarreau, was helping popularize the “smooth jazz” sounds that were revolutionizing the jazz radio industry. Platinum albums G-Force (1984) and Gravity (1985) followed, trumped by 1986’s five-million-selling Duotones.

It was with 1992’s Breathless, however, that Kenny truly began dominating the landscape. Selling 12 million copies in the U.S. and another 3 million internationally, Breathless remains the best-selling instrumental album of all time. Two years later, Miracles: The Holiday Album became the best-selling Christmas album ever with over 13 million copies sold.

Following several other multi-platinum smashes, Kenny has now released Paradise, possibly his most diverse album. Paradise was led by the Chante Moore-sung single “One More Time,” which became the most-added track on Adult Contemporary, NAC and Urban AC radio when released in August; the follow-up, a smoldering ballad featuring Brian McKnight entitled “All the Way,” seems likely to top that success.

Throughout the album, Kenny explores several of the genres he has mastered on past releases. The title track has a wistful, even melancholic feel, while “Brazil” and “Spanish Nights” offer some smooth Latin-tinged grooves. “Midnight Magic,” with such players as guitarist Phil Upchurch and keyboardist Greg Philliganes, is a solid funk groove, and the concluding “Peace” is, as its title suggests, a soothing, tranquil ending.

With a national tour planned for 2003 and a third holiday album, Wishes, in the works, Kenny G is positioning himself to remain at the musical forefront for some time. And as he’s already proven, time is very much on Kenny G’s side.

Talent, Timing Put Babyface on Top

<dc:subject>Artists, Babyface, Boyz II Men, Braxton, Toni, Carey, Mariah, Clapton, Eric, Foster, David, Kenny G, Musical Styles, Pop, R&B, Rock, Musicworld, Feature</dc:subject>

Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds has fashioned one of the most successful writing and producing careers in the history of pop music. His ability to tailor material and arrangements to a wide roster of clients, including Eric Clapton, Whitney Houston and Boyz II Men is due, in part, to Babyface's ability to handle production on his own work.

Gifted with an evocative voice, Babyface nonetheless had to sculpt a production style for himself that started with the understanding that his tenor is light. Working to his strengths, he developed a unique production style that featured spare percussion parts, uncluttered keyboards, crisp guitar hooks, and lush background vocal pads. Against this texture, Edmonds's voice stands out on such instant classics as "When Can I See You Again" and "Never Keeping Secrets."

His openness to the talents of others has led Babyface to some extraordinary partnerships. With L.A Reid, he has produced a number of successful albums. The pair's first hit single was the Whispers' beat-box driven "Rock Steady," and hits by Sheena Easton ("The Lover In Me") and Bobby Brown ("Don't Be Cruel," "Every Little Step") followed in short order. Their work for soul diva Whitney Houston yielded the phenomenally successful "I'm Your Baby Tonight."

Babyface has also brought a deft touch to the business side of the music industry. In 1989, at the ripe age of 30, he and LA Reid co-founded LaFace Records. Headquartered in Atlanta, the label (a subsidiary of Arista Records) launched the careers of Toni Braxton and TLC.

Not content to simply enjoy the fruits of his gifts, Babyface has recently joined lyricist Carole Bayer Sager and producer/composer David Foster in an online attempt to give back some good fortune to the artistic community. Website Tonos.com is dedicated to seeking out and giving a forum to talented musicians and artists around the world.

In 1992, Babyface's skills as writer and producer came together in the Boyz II Men smash single "End Of The Road, which remained at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 weeks. Edmonds and Reid would ride the success of this track to win Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song and Producer of the Year.

But Babyface and Boyz II Men weren't finished piling on the hit records. "I'll Make Love To You," written and produced by Edmonds, garnered the 1995 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song, as well as Song of the Year at the BMI Pop Awards. He has won the BMI Pop Songwriter of the Year trophy seven times, adding to his total of 51 BMI Awards, which includes Song of the Year kudos for his Toni Braxton hit, "Breathe Again," in 1994.

After turning his production talents on other artists, it was time for Babyface to revive his own performing and recording career. When production was completed on the soundtrack to Waiting To Exhale, He went to work on The Day, his next solo album for Epic. This double-platinum album would eventually yield a pair of hit singles: the platinum hit "This Is For The Lover In You," and "Every Time I Close My Eyes," which featured background vocals by Mariah Carey and Kenny G on sax.

Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds has achieved success by molding a composing and producing style that works for him, and then placing other performing artists in the spotlight and tailoring his skills to highlight their talent.

Will Nelson Gets the Blues

In a four-decade career that's seen him achieve distinction as both a beloved mainstream entertainer and a respected cutting-edge artist, Willie Nelson has managed to maintain his outlaw status. In the past few years, he's continued to stake out fresh artistic ground, releasing a series of adventurous, personal albums that have explored his musical roots as well as revisiting some of the early compositions that first put Nelson on the map.

That's the case with Nelson's new release, Milk Cow Blues, on which the multi-talented Texan explores his early blues influences with the help of such notable guests as B.B. King (on a reworking of King's 1969 breakthrough hit "The Thrill Is Gone"), Dr. John, Susan Tedeschi, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Keb' Mo' and Francine Reed. The album also features a studio band consisting of some of Austin, Texas' top blues players including guitarists Jimmie Vaughan and Derek O'Brien. The material includes such blues and r&b standards as "Kansas City," "Ain't Nobody's Business," "Sittin' On Top of the World" and "Texas Flood," while reaching back into Nelson's own songbook for the Willie compositions "Crazy," "Funny How Time Slips Away," "Night Life," "Wake Me When It's Over" and "Rainy Day Blues."

Though Milk Cow Blues is the artist's first official blues album, he's no stranger to the style, whose influence has been prominent in his own recordings. Indeed, Nelson's music has always been informed by the eclectic array of influences he'd absorbed while growing up in the Central Texas farm town of Abbott, where he was surrounded by a wide variety of music, from country and western swing to gospel and Mexican folk tunes. And the blues, of course.

"I was raised and worked in the cotton fields around Abbott with a lot of African-Americans and a lot of Mexican-Americans, and we listened to their music all the time," Nelson recalls. "I guess that's why I was influenced a lot by those around me; there was a lot of singing that went on in the cotton fields."

As for the relative scarcity of new self-penned material on his recent releases, Nelson recently commented to The Wall Street Journal, "I was originally a songwriter and still figure that's one of my strongest suits," but added, "Songwriting I don't really enjoy doing. That's work. I usually have more songs than I need, so I'm not under pressure to write anything new. I'm real critical of what I write, and I seem to be more so as I get older. Everything new I write I start tearing apart."
