A highlight of the ceremony took the form of the Richard Kirk Award presentation to esteemed composer Christopher Young. Named after late BMI Vice President Richard Kirk, the prestigious award is given annually to a composer who has made significant contributions to film and television music. As the 2008 honoree, Christopher Young joins an elite list of peers that includes George S. Clinton, Harry Gregson-Williams (PRS), Jerry Goldsmith, Thomas Newman, Michael Kamen, Mark Mothersbaugh, Danny Elfman, Alan Menken, Mike Post, Lalo Schifrin and John Williams.

Award-winning composer Christopher Young has carved out an enviable niche in the upper pantheon of Hollywood composers. The UCLA Film School alumnus first turned heads with fiendish scores for horror and science fiction projects, and he proceeded to garner accolades for work on macabre and fantastical films including Hellraiser, its Saturn award-winning sequel and Species, along with BMI award-winners Ghost Rider, The Grudge and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Young became a master of suspense, composing music for thrillers including Copycat and BMI honoree Entrapment, as well as dramatic and critical tours-de-force including Golden Globe nominee The Shipping News, Wonder Boys, Rounders and BMI award-winner Swordfish. He also fleshed out the haunting nuances and electrifying action sequences of box office gold Spiderman 3. The New Jersey native has also excelled in television composition, earning two Emmy nominations for telefilms Last Flight Out and Norma Jean & Marilyn. A dedicated mentor, Young has taught classes at USC, served as an advisor for the Sundance Institute's Film Composers Lab and created an innovative residential development to house aspiring composers in Los Angeles.

BMI also presented the Classic Contribution Award to Peter Golub in recognition of his progressive direction of the Sundance Institute's Film Composers Lab for the past ten years. An accomplished composer of film, theatre, ballet and concert works, Golub is a natural fit for the lab, which aims to enhance the role of music in independent film. His acute composition work includes scores for documentaries I.O.U.S.A. and Wordplay, along with films including The Great Debaters. Universally acknowledged as an unparalleled apprenticeship for the next generation of composing elite, the workshop has invaluably benefited from Golub's creative intuition and steady guidance.

BMI's Emmy-winning composers were also feted; the accomplished list included George Fenton (PRS) for the awe-inspiring documentary Planet Earth: Pole to Pole; William Ross for the 79th Annual Academy Awards; Lenny Williams for Nature: Christmas in Yellowstone; Yoav Goren for The XX Olympic Winter Games: The Stories of Torino; Katreese Barnes for Saturday Night Live's "Dick in a Box"; Gary Deinstadt, Billy Barber, Ron Komie, Danny Pelfrey and David Traugh for Guiding Light; along with Wes Boatman and John Henry Kreitler for "Love is Ecstasy" from Passions.

Legendary rocker turned lauded composer Pete Townshend (PRS) took home the evening's most awards, with three BMI Crystals for CSI, CSI: Miami and CSI: NY. Composers garnering two awards each were Steve Jablonsky for Transformers and Desperate Housewives; Rupert Gregson-Williams (PRS) for Bee Movie and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry; George Fenton for Fool's Gold and Planet Earth: Pole to Pole; Mychael Danna for Surf's Up and Medium; Aaron Zigman for Step Up 2: The Streets and Why Did I Get Married?; Kevin Kiner for Amazing Race and CSI: Miami; Mike Post for Law & Order and Law & Order SVU; and Matt Koskenmaki for Hell's Kitchen and The Ultimate Fighter.

Honor Announced Feb. 29 at Berklee’s 10th Annual BMI Day

Composer Javier Zacharias was named the 2008 BMI Film Scoring Scholarship recipient at a presentation during the 10th annual BMI Day at Berklee College of Music. BMI composer Mark Mancina, in whose name this year's scholarship is given; Chris Montan, Walt Disney Music president; Doreen Ringer-Ross, BMI Vice President, Film/TV relations; Berklee President Roger Brown; and Berklee Film Scoring Chair Dan Carlin presented the scholarship to Zacharias at the event.
The BMI Film Scoring Scholarship is a yearly tuition scholarship awarded on the basis of compositional maturity and talent, as well as financial need. Each year, the scholarship is given in the name of a noted BMI composer. Mancina, this year's honored composer, and Chris Montan, Walt Disney Music president, co-taught a master class on film scoring as part of the ceremony.

“This scholarship continues our mission of supporting young and emerging composers at the college level," stated BMI's Ringer-Ross. "We support Berklee's commitment to excellence in music and film scoring and their determination to further the growth of talented, trained, and educated composers.”

Javier Zacharias, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, developed an interest in jazz at age 7 when he began playing piano. At 11, he also picked up the saxophone, studying with some of Argentina's finest players. In 2002, he passed up a scholarship to study contemporary music at Escuela de Musica Contemporanea, enrolling instead at the Universidad Católica Argentina, where he duel majored in orchestra conducting and composition. Before long, Zacharias was playing saxophone, keyboard, and drums in a variety of commercial groups. Prior to moving to Boston to study film scoring at Berklee, he was pursuing an industrial engineering degree at Universidad de Buenos Aires.

Mark Mancina has composed film scores for almost every genre: drama, action, comedy, suspense, and period epic. His honors include three Grammys, an American Music Award, Britain’s Ivor Novello Award, and a Tony nomination. Born in Santa Monica, CA, he began his musical training at an early age, focusing on guitar, piano, bass, percussion, and drums. Recent career highlights include composing the original score for films August Rush, Camille, and Shooter, and co-scoring the CBS primetime drama Criminal Minds. Past projects include the Oscar-winning Training Day, Speed, Twister, Bad Boys, Tarzan, and Moll Flanders. In addition to his film and television work, Mancina added Broadway to his list of accomplishments when he co-wrote songs, produced, and arranged the score for the musical production of The Lion King.

Chris Montan began his career as a BMI singer-songwriter before finding his niche in production. A longtime music executive in the recording and film industry, Mr. Montan joined Walt Disney Productions in 1984, now serving as President of Walt Disney Music. Under his guidance, soundtracks from nine theatrical releases (Cocktail, Beaches, The Little Mermaid, Pretty Woman, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas and Tarzan) were certified multi-platinum. Additionally, Disney has received GRAMMY, Oscar, and Golden-Globe recognition for many of its music entries. Among Mr. Montan’s recent projects are the multi-Oscar nominated films Ratatouille, Enchanted, and Cars. He also was a producer on the Wonderful World of Disney's production of Cinderella, nominated for seven Emmy Awards. Perhaps more significantly, Mr. Montan has played a major role in Disney’s transition into Broadway musicals, meeting unparalleled success on such projects as Beauty and the Beast and Lion King.

Before long, Zacharias was playing saxophone, keyboard, and drums in a variety of commercial groups. Prior to moving to Boston to study film scoring at Berklee, he was pursuing an industrial engineering degree at Universidad de Buenos Aires.

Thomas Newman Named Richard Kirk Award Recipient for Outstanding Career Achievement

BMI last night honored the composers and songwriters of the music in the top-grossing films of the year and the top-rated prime-time network television shows at its annual Film & Television Awards dinner. Held at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, the black tie gala was hosted by BMI President and CEO Frances W. Preston. More than 52 awards were given out during the ceremonies.

The highlight of the evening was the prestigious Richard Kirk Award, which was presented to composer Thomas Newman in recognition for Outstanding Career Achievement. Newman, a four time Oscar nominee and BAFTA award winner, has scored such films as The Shawshank Redemption, The Horse Whisperer, The Player, Little Women, Fried Green Tomatoes, American Beauty, The Green Mile, Phenomenon, American Buffalo, The People Vs Larry Flynt, Oscar and Lucinda, and many others. The youngest son of legendary composer Alfred Newman, Thomas studied composition and orchestration at USC, completing his academic work at Yale. He scored his first film, Reckless, at the age of 29, and his reputation for originality and for intensifying mood and character grew with his work on such films as Gung Ho, Scent Of A Woman, Citizen Cohn and many others.

Directors Frank Darabont (The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption) and Jon Avnet (Fried Green Tomatoes, George of the Jungle) sent video messages congratulating him on his award. Darabont said, "Tom's music has added an enormous amount to both The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. He is a quote 'storyteller' and that's what he views his job as - which is wonderful. He manages to elicit an enormous amount of the emotional content of the filmwithout being obvious. He gives you something a little unexpected but yet you're in tears by the end of it. He's quite brilliant that way."

Avnet described Newman as, "Basically my voice on a certain level." Described as an open, collaborative and devoted composer who brings his small children to the conducting stand at times, Avnet said, "He creates a kind of visceral situation whereby you're able to experience the narrative - you won't see in Tom's music a lot of stings and hits and 'look at me.' Instead, you'll see a kind of airy weave that allows you to feel what's going on. He doesn't point, and that's part of what I like about his work. "

Composers receiving multiple Film Music Awards for their work included Newman for The Green Mile, American Beauty and Erin Brockovich; and Jerry Goldsmith for The Haunting and The Mummy.

BMI Composers who received Film Music Awards included John Williams for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace; George S.
