BMI songwriters, composers and artists made a historically impressive showing February 10 at the 2008 Grammys as they swept the most elite categories of music’s biggest night. Neo-soul chanteuse Amy Winehouse claimed five trophies, including Record, Song and Best New Artist of the Year, while Mark Ronson received Producer of the Year recognition for his stunning work on Winehouse’s Back to Black. Progressive rapper and creative tour de force Kanye West took home four prestigious awards, including Rap Album of the Year, and in an especially poignant moment, jazz icon Herbie Hancock received the evening’s most coveted honor, Album of the Year, for River: The Joni Letters, his tribute to Joni Mitchell.

Full BMI Grammy Award Winners List

Unable to attend the ceremony due to a tardy issuance of her visa, Winehouse watched, accepted awards and performed twice via satellite in London. Her innate vintage cool and authentic emotion echoed through her performances of Record and Song of the Year, “Rehab,” along with “I’m No Good.” After claiming the most Grammys of any artist throughout the evening, including Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album, Winehouse’s ubiquitous artistic shadow was most certainly in attendance.

Charismatic rap star Kanye West further emphasized his staying power with wins in Rap Album and Solo Rap Performance of the Year. Honored both as a songwriter and recording artist, West also earned Rap Song of the Year bragging rights for “Good Life.” In addition to garnering accolades for his solo work, West claimed Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for his collaboration with Common on “Southside.”

“What a beautiful day this is in Los Angeles!” Herbie Hancock’s visible surprise while accepting his Album of the Year trophy provided a sublimely extemporaneous moment during the telecast. The first jazz project in 43 years to win Album of the Year, Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters features collaborations with numerous contemporary stylists, including Norah Jones and Corinne Bailey Rae. The project also garnered Best Contemporary Jazz Album honors.

BMI’s preeminent rock family enjoyed a successful night as well. The unfaltering Foo Fighters took home Best Hard Rock Performance honors for driving single “The Pretender,” while their Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace earned Rock Album of the Year. Critical darlings and rock purists The White Stripes claimed Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for the title track to Icky Thump, which also garnered Best Alternative Album bragging rights for the enigmatic duo.

Beloved jazz saxophonist and composer Michael Brecker received posthumous awards for Best Jazz Instrumental Album (Individual or Group) and Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. Perennial favorites The Clark Sisters also secured honors for Best Gospel Performance and Best Gospel Song.

Additional winners included Carrie Underwood for Best Female and Keith Urban for Best Male Country Vocal Performances; Calle 13 for Best Latin Urban Album; Ray Price and Willie Nelson for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals; Juan Luis Guerra for Best Tropical Latin Album; Vince Gill’s These Days for Best Country Album; Rihanna’s “Umbrella” for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration; Maroon 5 for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals; and Alison Krauss for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

Porter Wagoner: A Satisfied Mind

<dc:subject>Parton, Dolly, Staples, Mavis, Stuart, Marty, Wagoner, Porter, White Stripes, The, Country, Feature</dc:subject>

Country music legend Porter Wagoner passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2007, after a long battle with lung cancer. MusicWorld's Deborah Evans Price interviewed Wagoner just weeks prior to his death.

Talent and authenticity are ageless, and Porter Wagoner is living proof. At 80 years old, Wagoner is enjoying a career resurgence that has included a Madison Square Garden performance with the White Stripes, an appearance on David Letterman’s late night talkfest and a celebration of his 50th anniversary as a member of the Grand Old Opry.

“So many great things are happening to me and it’s just been terrific,” says Wagoner. “It’s not the fact that I’m the greatest performer or writer or anything; it’s the fact that I can still do it and still do a good job at it. I’m so thankful for that.”

Wagoner has always been among country music’s most visible entertainers — and that’s not just because of his signature, flashy Nudie suits. Wagoner has continued to tour nationally and perform regularly on the Opry. In the past year, his profile gained an additional boost with Wagonmaster, a compelling new album produced by Marty Stuart and released on the Los Angeles-based Anti-label.

“Marty was pretty smart in doing that because they really wanted the record,” Wagoner says of the company, whose eclectic roster includes Mavis Staples, Galactic, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, and Neko Case. “They really like me and my style that’s why he decided on going out there with it.”

Wagoner says he and Stuart had talked about collaborating for a long time. “Marty grew up watching ‘The Porter Wagoner Show’,” Wagoner says of his syndicated TV show that ran throughout the ’60s and ’70s. “He knew all about me and he became a big fan of mine when he was about 12 or 13 years old. He had some great ideas for the album and I was really pleased with what he did.”

Wagonmaster is just the latest in a long line of achievements. Born August 12, 1927 in West Plains, Missouri, Wagoner got his start on a local radio station. He signed with RCA Records in 1952 and released “Settin’ the Woods on Fire.” The following year he scored his first success as a songwriter, penning “Trademark” for Carl Smith. He moved to Nashville in 1957, joined the Opry, and began churning out such hits as “Misery Loves Company,” “Green, Green Grass of Home,” “A Satisfied Mind,” and “The Carroll County Accident.”

Wagoner is also responsible for introducing the world to Dolly Parton on “The Porter Wagoner Show.” A BMI writer for decades, Wagoner credits Parton for spurring his songwriting. “She gave me a lot of encouragement, [saying] how good a writer I was,” says Wagoner, who was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2002. “We wrote a lot of the duets that we did and we had a lot of success.”

Wagoner looks back fondly on the TV show, but admits when he started, he was advised not to do television because it would negatively affect his live shows. Back then, conventional wisdom said people wouldn’t pay to see you in concert if they could see you on TV for free. Wagoner challenged that notion and his bookings went up with his TV ratings. “Being a member of the Opry of course was a big thing for me, but it wasn’t like being on television on a regular basis every week. People would plan their Saturday and they wouldn’t go anywhere until they’d seen ‘The Porter Waggoner Show.’ It was a wonderful thing,” Wagoner says of the show, which is currently airing again on RFD-TV.

Though surgery for an aneurysm slowed Wagoner down for a few months last year, the four-time Grammy winner is back in action. He’s been writing songs and plans to record another gospel project as well as another country album with Stuart.

Wagoner admits he’s enjoyed the renewed focus on his music; the fact that his grandchildren are seeing it is an added plus. “I played a big auditorium and my granddaughter came backstage and tears were pouring down her face. She said, ‘Pawpaw, people out there stood up for you!’ Just things like that really make you feel like you have accomplished something,” he says. “This late in life, that’s kind of nice.”

The Raconteurs

<dc:subject>Raconteurs, The, White Stripes, The, White, Jack, Rock, BMI Europe, Hitmaker</dc:subject>

Webster’s defines a “raconteur” as “one who excels at telling anecdotes.” Or in other words, a storyteller. Anyone who knows Jack White’s prodigious talents as a songwriter with The White Stripes would agree that he’s one of contemporary rock’s mightiest musical storytellers (as well as a premier stylist, guitarist and bandleader). Pair him with another notable songwriter and artist, White’s old Detroit pal Brendan Benson, then add bassist Jack Lawrence and drummer Patrick Keeler — both from the Cincinnati band The Greenhornes — and you have The Raconteurs, one of the hottest new wrinkles within the modern rock scene.

The new group began when White and Benson got together one hot summer day and wrote and recorded the song “Steady, As She Goes” at Benson’s East Grand Studio (which was, in fact, the attic of his home). Fired by what they created, the two joined forces with Lawrence and Keeler — whose band had been produced by Benson — to record a full album of Benson/White compositions whenever they had time amidst all their other activities.

“We just went in and wrote songs and recorded immediately,” says White of their creative approach. Even though inspiration drove the project, the process of getting 10 songs down took a good year. But finally, in May 2006, the foursome released their debut album as The Raconteurs, Broken Boy Soldiers.

The disc hit No. 7 on the U.S. charts and No. 2 in the U.K., powered by the success of its first single, the seminal “Steady, As She Goes,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. Hitting the road to appear at festivals like Lollapalooza as well as at clubs, the group that calls itself “a new band made up of old friends” quickly became a star attraction.

What at first glance may have looked like a one-off side project now seems destined to take its place alongside its members’ other pursuits. The band has relocated to Nashville and is writing and recording new material. But even after a hit album and the better part of a year on the road, The Raconteurs remain a work in progress. “The band is just changing so much,” says White. “We’re really trying to figure out what we are.”

“Boredom is death!” declares Lindsay “Coco” Hames, lead singer/songwriter for THE ETTES. “You’ll never see us bored… or boring.” That’s for sure. Since their inception in early 2004, THE ETTES have taken the world by storm. Drawing inspiration from early punk and beat bands, such as the Stooges, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, as well as more melodic ‘60s country acts such as Patsy Cline and Nancy Sinatra, THE ETTES have developed a rock-and-roll sound all their own.

Moving west from NYC, Coco and Poni Silver met up in Los Angeles, California. Stuck in a new town, they struck up an immediate and explosive musical relationship that quickly earned that ever-elusive “buzz” about town. After a few evolutions, McCartney-esque Jem Cohen joined the show, and THE ETTES were complete. Jem’s garage background—and Poni’s powerful punk rock beats—fused with Coco’s ‘60s country vocals to create a whole new rock-and-roll sound that has been blowing people away from the US to the UK and beyond.

Reviews on THE ETTES’ live show regularly comment on the high performance level and stage presence of the band. All longtime performers, THE ETTES are right at home on stage. Poni, on her violently powerful live drumming: “Sometimes it’s an accident”, she suggests. “Other times, I might be trying to attack you. You never can tell.” And with Jem’s melodic lead bass playing, THE ETTES have evolved even further, thrilling audiences with the talents that make them such a powerhouse. “All we can be are ourselves,” shrugs Coco. “And we’re good at it.”

THE ETTES’ sharp but good-natured sense of humor recalls the ever-present ribbing and creativity that flowed through early Beatles footage. Individually and collectively, THE ETTES just have something about them, and the world has taken notice. Presented by KCRW in NYC, a favorite of KXLU, WFMU and INDIE 103.1, THE ETTES have won over radio all over the place; even BBC Radio 1’s Steve Lamacq is a fan. THE ETTES tour relentlessly, sharing the stage with such acts as THE BLOOD ARM, THE CONSTANTINES, THE NEW YORK DOLLS, THE MUFFS, and THE GO-GO’s to mention a very few.

On September 12, THE ETTES’ debut album “Shake the Dust” is available worldwide (Sympathy for the Record Industry), from stores like Amoeba, Virgin, Tower, and Rough Trade to online shops such as Amazon.com. Recorded at Toe Rag Studios in London with Liam Watson (the White Stripes, Billy Childish, the Kills) “Shake the Dust” is pure ETTES: energetic, electric, and totally new. Even before its release “Shake the Dust” is blasted from radio stations and Podcasts (including from BMI and Music Plus), and with their appeal spreading to television, film and all over the Internet, there’s no telling what’s next for THE ETTES. The sky is the limit.

THE ETTES’ “SHAKE THE DUST” FALL TOUR 2006

Filter-lauded buzz band THE ETTES hit the road in September supporting the release of their debut album “Shake the Dust” on Sympathy for the Record Industry (September 12). Recorded at Toe Rag Studios in London with Liam Watson (the White Stripes, the Kills) “Shake the Dust” has the energetic three-piece flaunting influences from the Stooges to Patsy Cline, with a healthy dose of Stones for good measure.

Anyone who thinks that today’s teen musicians are all flash and fluff need only listen to Joss Stone for a taste of something deeper. Although only 16 years old when she debuted with The Soul Sessions in the fall of 2003, Stone sings with the authority of someone far older, and her sound harkens back to the golden days of soul.

The Devon, England native was reared on old school soul and r&b, and was especially enamored with Aretha Franklin. When she started singing herself, Stone discovered she has a deep and rich voice not unlike that of her heroine. After winning the BBC’s “Star For A Night” talent show, she landed a deal with S-Curve Records and headed to Miami to record under the tutelage of soul sister Betty Wright (“Clean Up Woman”). After laying down her own songs, she took a stab at some r&b classics with the crew of veteran players and writers responsible for the 1970s “Miami Sound.” The results were so impressive that S-Curve president Steve Greenberg decided to use them to introduce Stone to the public.

The resulting album, The Soul Sessions — augmented by her take on The White Stripes’ “Fell In Love With The Boy,” waxed in Philadelphia with Angie Stone and The Roots — brought Stone immediate attention on its release in the fall of 2003. It has since gone on to sell two million copies.

Now, a year later, she is following up her phenomenal success with Mind, Body & Soul , writing or co-writing 12 of its 14 tracks. “There’ll be a reggae track on there, and some hip-hop influences in there,” says Stone. “But, it’s still soulful. I can’t sing without soul. I try to keep a little bit of soul in there, because that’s what it’s all about.”
