John Williams, Elton John to Receive Kennedy Center Honors

BMI film composer/conductor John Williams and BMI songwriter/artist Sir Elton John are among the six recipients of the 2004 Kennedy Center Honors. The gala performance honoring this year's award winners will take place December 5 in the Kennedy Center's Opera House in Washington, DC attended by President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, and by artists from around the world.

Prior to the gala, the honorees and members of the nominating committee along with the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees will be received at the White House by the President and First Lady. The Kennedy Center Honors will be given out the night before on December 4 at a State Department dinner, to be hosted by Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Other 2004 honorees include actor, producer, writer and director Warren Beatty; husband-and-wife actors, writers and producers Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee; and soprano Joan Sutherland.

The Kennedy Center Honors are awarded to artists for their contribution to American culture in the fields of dance, music, theater, opera, film or television. The awards, now in their 27th year, are given by the trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
