BMI Hosts ‘Merengue’ Panel

BMI's Latin music department hosted a panel entitled "Merengue: Popular Music and the Industry" at El Museo del Barrio, New York City's only Latino museum dedicated to Puerto Rican, Caribbean and Latin American art. The one-day symposium examined what is being done to promote and keep merengue alive in today's musical world, as well as the evolution of merengue in the music industry in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

Pictured after the panel are promoter Vidal Cedeño, producer/manager Rafael "Cholo" Brenes, artist Amarfis Aquino, BMI's Porfirio Piña, producer Henry Jimenez and his son, and panel moderator Edgardo Díaz Díaz.

BMI's Porfirio Piña, Director of Latin Music, was among the panelists that also included ethnomusicologist Edgardo Díaz Díaz as moderator, top New York merengue promoter Vidal Cedeño, Dominican producer/manager Rafael "Cholo" Brenes, urban merengue artist Amarfis Aquino, and merengue producer Henry Jimenez.
