BMI Analyzes Music in Film at SXSW 2009
BMI will partner with the 2009 SXSW Film Festival to offer two touchstone events: “BMI Presents: Film Music, the Bastard Child of Post Production” on Sunday, March 15 and “A Conversation with Michael Penn” on Tuesday, March 17, both at 11 a.m. in the Austin Convention Center (500 E. Cesar Chavez St).
“BMI Presents: Film Music, the Bastard Child of Post Production” will be hosted by BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations Doreen Ringer Ross, and panelists will include Hunnypot Unlimited’s John Anderson, Grammy-nominated composer, producer and recording artist Paul Haslinger, Know Your Mushrooms documentary director Ron Mann, agent Linda Kordek, songwriter/artist Grant Lee Phillips and Primary Wave Music’s Michelle Belcher. Film music drives audience emotions and individual scenes can be defined by a particular song or music cue. Essential as it is, film music is often under budgeted and misunderstood. This roundtable discussion will explore effective tactics for finding a film’s sound as well as the practical realities for licensing source material.
“A Conversation with Michael Penn” will be moderated by BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations Doreen Ringer Ross, and will focus on the extensive career of acclaimed film composer and singer-songwriter Michael Penn.
Michael Penn is not afraid of new artistic challenges. He has composed original scores for films including esteemed director Paul Thomas Anderson’s debut Hard Eight and Boogie Nights, as well as The Last Kiss, DVDX Best Original Score winner Melvin Goes to Dinner, Alan Cummings’ The Anniversary Party, Academy Award-nominated director Nanette Burnstein’s American Teen, Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize award-nominee Sunshine Cleaning, and That Evening Sun. As a singer-songwriter, he specializes in pop that analyzes and questions as it sparkles, warmed by his inviting tenor. Penn doesn’t shy away from intelligent lyrics, but he’s not afraid of catchy melodies either, essentially creating thinking-person cake they can have and eat, too. He has released critical-standout albums including March, Free-for-All, Resigned, MP4: Days Since a Lost Time Accident, and 2005’s Mr. Hollywood Jr., 1947, which was reissued in 2007 with bonus tracks. www.myspace.com/michaelpenn
