Press Release

NEW YORK - October 15, 2013 – Broadcast Music, Inc.® (BMI®), the global leader in music rights management, tonight presented the BMI Icon Award to music legend John Lydon at the 2013 BMI London Awards. Music industry guests filled London’s Dorchester Hotel to celebrate the U.K., European and Asian songwriters, producers and publishers of the most-performed songs on United States radio and television in the past year.

John Lydon (PRS) was named BMI Icon because of his “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers” and joins a list of past honorees including Queen, Ray Davies, Steve Winwood, Van Morrison, Donovan, Don Black and Bryan Ferry, among others.

BMI presented Sweden’s Jörgen Elofsson (STIM) and U.S. writing partner Ali Tamposi (BMI) with the Song of the Year Award (The Robert S. Musel Award) for penning the global hit “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You),” performed by Kelly Clarkson. This award is given to the most-performed song in the BMI catalogue on U.S. radio and television over the past twelve months. Perfect Storm Music Group (STIM) and Universal Music Publishing (STIM) published the song.

The Dance Award was presented to Dutch songwriter Giorgio Tuinfort (BUMA) for the David Guetta-performed worldwide smash “Titanium.” Sony/ATV Music Publishing (PRS) and Talpa Music (BUMA) published the million-selling song, which reached No. 1 on the U.K. charts in 2012 and was listed among the Top 10 in over 12 countries. Giorgio Tuinfort was also acknowledged with the Pop Awards for “Titanium” and two other David Guetta hits, “I Can Only Imagine” and “Turn Me On.”

Throughout the night, BMI honored many British songwriters and co-writers of the most-performed songs on U.S. radio and television. a-ha was presented with a BMI Million-Air Award to honor the four million combined radio performances of their hit song, ”Take On Me.” Pop Awards were presented to Ellie Goulding (PRS) for her acclaimed hit song “Lights” and Snow Patrol for “Called Out In The Dark,” from their Fallen Empires album. Other honorees included Ed Sheeran (PRS) for “The A-Team,” Adele (PRS) for “Rumour Has It” and ”Skyfall,” Example (PRS) for penning the Wanted’s pop hit “Chasing the Sun,” Wayne Hector (PRS) for the Wanted’s No. 1 single “Glad You Came,” Jimbo Barry (PRS/IMRO) for “Hall Of Fame,” performed by the Script feat. will.i.am, Jamie Scott (PRS) for writing the song “Free” performed by Graffiti6, and Mark Hadfield (PRS) for Ne-Yo’s “Let Me Love You.”

Also saluted were composers of the most-watched and highest-grossing television programs and films, along with the legendary songwriters behind classics that have generated more than three million U.S. radio and television performances.
