Red Delicious
Red Delicious is reaping the benefits of the Internet. With over one million impressions for their track “Want Me” from CD sales, downloads and licensing use from the Internet, the Pasadena, CA-based group has become one of the darlings of the medium in a very short time.
Since May 1, 1999 they have had over 500,000 downloads on www.MP3.com, and their web site, www.Red-Delicious.com, has had more than 20,000 hits since May. They have been the #1 alternative rock band on MP3.com for six months straight, have received the “People’s Choice Award” from MP3.com for their cover of “One More Day, One More Night,” and receive thousands of fan e-mails daily. For a band that doesn’t have a major label or music publishing deal, they are getting more attention than some of their better-known peers and building an international fan base in the process.
“When we sent the music to MP3.com I never thought anyone would find the music because there is so much music on the site,” says Rob King. “We thought of it as more of a promotional tool - like radio. We didn’t expect it to explode this much.”
Consisting of Sara Wallace on lead vocals, Steven Baca on guitars, bass and keyboards, and Rob King on keyboards, drums and programming, the group formed in 1998. The music they have created is an evocative blend of alternative rock with electronic and trip-hop influences.
Wallace’s powerful, soulful voice drives the band, and their music is able to move from guitar-driven alternative rock songs to moody, ethereal pop. Currently, they have posted six songs online with 10 more recorded for a full-length CD. Their goal still remains to secure a recording contract with a label, with the Internet exposure moving it quickly along. “We want to share our music with the world, and getting a recording contract will help us do that,” says Baca.
