BMI Sets Date for 9th Annual Latin Music Awards
BMI today announced that the 9th Annual Latin Music Awards will be held May 8 at the Diplomat Hotel & Resort in Hollywood, Florida. The black tie, invitation-only awards ceremony will coincide with the Billboard Latin Music Conference & Awards 2002 taking place at the nearby Eden Roc Resort from May 7-9.
The BMI Latin Music Awards recognize the songwriters and publishers of the most played Latin songs on U.S. radio and television from the company’s repertoire of approximately 4.5 million musical works from around the world. A Latin Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Publisher of the Year will be announced during the evening. Previous BMI Latin Award winners include Shakira, Estefano, Gloria & Emilio Estefan, Kike Santander, Jose de Jesus Navarro (Banda Arkangel R-15), A.B. Quintanilla, Mario Quintero (Los Tucanes de Tijuana) and Los Tigres del Norte. This is the fourth time the BMI Latin Awards will be held in the Miami area; they have also been staged in Los Angeles and San Antonio.
In related news, BMI regional Mexican artist Lupillo Rivera leads the list of finalists for the Billboard Latin Awards, which will take place on May 9 at the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami Beach, the day after the BMI Latin Awards. Rivera's six mentions, announced yesterday morning (2/12/02) at a star-studded press conference held at BillboardLive in Miami Beach, include two each in the male and new-artist categories for Regional Mexican Album of the Year for his two highly successful albums Despreciado and Sufriendo a Solas, both released in the same year. |
