Premier Player Awards

Posted in News on April 14, 2002

On March 28, the Memphis Chapter of The Recording Academy honored the best of its local music community with its Premier Player Awards. The evening included a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Sun Records, the legendary label where a number of artists, such as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash, got their starts. Recording Academy President/CEO Michael Greene presented certificates to Sun Records founder Sam Phillips for eight recordings he produced that have been inducted in the GRAMMY Hall of Fame. Phillips, a longtime BMI affiliate, was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame last year.

Backstage at the Orpheum Theatre are (l to r) BMI's Thomas Cain, Sam Phillips, BMI's Mark Mason, Memphis Chapter Executive Director Jon Hornyak, Recording Academy President & CEO Michael Greene, Knox Phillips and Memphis Chapter President Kurt Clayton.
