Members of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop participated in a clinic at the recent International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) conference held in New York City. Entitled "Big Band Composition for the 21st Century," the two-hour event featured a seminar conducted by Jim McNeely, Musical Director of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, followed by a concert of music written by Workshop members.

The BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, now in its second decade, was formed to provide an environment where the composer has the freedom to explore new avenues in the creative process, while at the same time honing and solidifying his or her skills. Led by acclaimed composers/educators Jim McNeely and Michael Abene, the Workshop was founded by acclaimed trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, composer/educator Manny Albam and author and jazz authority Burt Korall. The BMI/New York Jazz Orchestra, a 16-piece modern jazz ensemble, performs annually at the BMI Summer Showcase Concert where the winner of the Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize is announced.

With over 8,000 members in 40 countries, IAJE is the leading authority and primary voice for the promotion of jazz through education and outreach.
