Banda El Recodo To Be Named Icon at BMI Latin Awards
Banda El Recodo will receive the BMI Icon Award at the 20th annual BMI Latin Awards on March 21 at the Bellagio Hotel Las Vegas. The private ceremony, hosted by BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and Delia Orjuela, BMI Vice President, Latin Music, will also celebrate the Latin Song, Songwriter and Publisher of the Year in addition to the songwriters and publishers of the past year’s most-performed Latin songs on American radio and television in the U.S.
Banda El Recodo, who will be saluted that evening with an all-star musical tribute, is being honored for their “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.” They join an elite list of other BMI Icons that includes such Latin music giants as Gustavo Santaolalla, Juan Luis Guerra, Gloria Estefan, Los Tigres Del Norte, and Carlos Santana, as well as music legends Brian Wilson, Isaac Hayes, Paul Simon, Daryl Hall and John Oates, Dave Foster, Dolly Parton, Mariah Carey and the late James Brown.
Founded in 1938 in Sinaloa, Mexico, Banda El Recodo de Cruz Lizárraga often referred to as Banda El Recodo is inarguably one of the most influential Banda musical groups in the history of the genre. An extensive list of accolades fills the veteran group’s more than75 years of making music including Latin GRAMMY Awards for Best Banda Song for “Lo Mejor de mi Vida”, Best Banda Album for “Contigo por Siempre”, Best Banda Album for “Por Ti” and Best Banda Album for “En Vivo.”
In addition, Banda El Recodo has won multiple Billboard Awards, including Billboard’s Hall of Fame award for 66 years of contributions to Regional Mexican music. They have also won GRAMMY Awards for Best Mexican-American Album for “No Me Se Rajar”, Best Mexican-American Album for “Por Ti”, Best Mexican-American Album for “Mas Fuerte Que Nunca and Best Mexican-American Album for “Que Bonito… Es lo Bonito.” Their list of honors also includes most awarded Regional Mexican group at Premios Lo Nuestro, consecutive Premios Oye! awards for Best Banda, multiple awards from Monitor Latino including its prestigious “Song of the Year” award for having the number one song on Mexican radio for 26 weeks and 19 weeks in the United States. Multiple BMI awards including most performed Latin song in 2009 for “Te Presumo” also fill their resume.
Demonstrating the legendary group’s role as genre leaders, Banda El Recodo has toured the world, becoming the first Mexican artists to visit five continents, make more than 200 recordings, attaining sales exceeding 23 million copies, and have five consecutive years in which every single the put out reached number one on radio in Mexico and the United States. Banda El Recodo was given its own day in Los Angeles in 2010 and in Las Vegas in 2008. They are also the only group that has performed at three World Cups in support of the Mexican National Soccer Team and the first Regional Mexican group to perform at the White House, making them living legends after 75 years and creating a firm place in the history of Mexican music.
