‘Billy Elliot’ Leads 2009 BMI Tony Nominees

Inspiring musical Billy Elliot garnered the most nods as nominations for the 63rd Annual Tony Awards were announced Tuesday, May 5 in New York. Featuring music and lyrics by legend Elton John (PRS), the Great Depression-era bildungsroman earned 15 nominations, including Best Musical and Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre.

Broadway’s 9 to 5, featuring new songs and the classic title composition by BMI Icon Dolly Parton, also earned a Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre nomination. Next to Normal, with music by BMI composers Tom Kitt and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, received an impressive 11 nominations, which include Best Musical, Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Orchestrations. Rock of Ages, which features numerous BMI rock classics, garnered five nods, including Best Musical and a Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical nomination for BMI artist/songwriter Constantine Maroulis.
