The Musicians Institute hosted their 5th annual Film Music Industry Panel at the 2019 Film Music Intensive in Hollywood recently. The Intensive, created by the institute’s Rachel Yoon and designed by co-artistic directors Craig Richey and Tom Villano, pairs six Musicians Institute composers with local directors who work together scoring the directors’ short films. The program takes them from the initial spotting session to a final recording session with some of LA’s top session players, delving into the collaborative process, developing a common language to discuss music, and learning how to translate that into a finished score that reflects the director’s vision. The panel discussion, which was part of the Intensive, focused on the many relationships film composers must cultivate throughout their careers.
