BMI Composer Emer Kinsella Returns to the Culver Steps for “Renewal”

BMI was very proud to support Irish composer Emer Kinsella for this year’s edition of the Culver Steps series in Culver City on April 24 and 25, with a performance that emphasized the concept of renewal. Kinsella was joined by the Emersion Ensemble, which includes Mehmet Aydin, Mark Bassett, and Hakeem Holloway, as well as special guests Enosh Kofler and Boryana Popova.

The event began with a panel discussion, with the composers discussing what “renewal” means to them and how that theme was going to be informing the pieces from several different scores that they would be performing, which were written by Kinsella, Matthew Wang, Cala Patullo, and Hannah Parrott. Additionally, they performed music by Denise Santos* and Yuichoro Oku*.

Accompanying the live performance were movement artists, Darrel ‘Friidom’ Dunn, Malik ‘Gvmby’ Bannister, Allie Costello, and Alyse Rockett. The dancers performed a blend of choreographed and improvised movements, bringing the music to life as they wove through the crowd on the Culver Steps.

The composers also discussed their upcoming projects and how thankful they were for such an incredible event that aimed to bring the creative community together.
