BMI Indie Spotlight: Summer 2023
With summer in full swing, it’s time for another edition of the BMI Indie Spotlight to score your long days and hot nights with cool new music. Start off with the poetic R&B/Pop of Devin Kennedy, who launched a solo career in 2018 and has since been releasing successful singles that have earned millions of streams and views on TikTok. From there, switch gears to the laid-back songs of UMI, whose hybrid of R&B and Folk music is all about healing and human connection. Next up is the distinctive Neo-American sounds of ¿Téo?, who has captured legions of listeners with his blend of Bossa-Nova, Hip-hop and Alternative. Continuing the groove is bLACk pARty, whose smooth styles from psychedelic funk to soulful rock fills his new album, Hummingbirds. By contrast, Salt Lake City’s Krooked Kings offer up an undeniable brand of vibrant garage rock with hook-laden indie-rock choruses. Representing a stunning mix of jazz, hip-hop and R&B, Brooklyn’s Cisco Swank adds some authentic New York City flavor, and singer/songwriter Charli Adams brings audiences to hushed silence with her mesmerizing blend of intimate pop. SoCal indie trio Rec Hall breaks things up with their beachy blend of funky rhythms and post-punk tones, while Los Angeles duo Junior Varsity brings a high-energy edge. Patrick Martin brings on emotional catharsis with his warm and relatable pop/rock songs about life and love. By way of Buffalo-via-Brooklyn, Wilmah’s spin on alternative pop is disruptive and infectious, while Hearty Har perfects a blend of modern psychedelia and classic garage rock.
