BMI Indie Spotlight: DellaXOZ
DellaXOZ is the moniker of 18-year-old Daniella Lubasu, who grew up on the outskirts of Manchester and felt the influence of the city’s strong indie rock legacy from the beginning. Equally significant to her was the music of her Congolese heritage: upbeat rhythms, driving bass, and intricate guitar riffs were a constant presence in her childhood, and it’s at this intersection where she grounds her sonic identity. At age 13, Lubasu wrote and produced her first song, and she cites artists like Nicki Minaj, La Tigre, Bikini Kill, Lana Del Rey, and Lorde for inspiring her sound with their clever wordplay, fearless bravado, and keen ability to seamlessly shift between emotions. With her formative teenage years all happening during a global pandemic, it’s little wonder that the classic coming-of-age concerns are set in wider social issues and commentary; her 2022 EP is even called THE DELLA VARIANT. Check out streaming favorites like “AHH!!,” “sad times, grow up,” and “$CARY,” out now.
