BMI Indie Spotlight: Raelyn Nelson Band

Posted in News on February 22, 2022

Raelyn Nelson Band is a female-fronted group from Nashville that is part Loretta Lynn and part Cheap Trick. They’re led by the group’s namesake, and if you thought her last name had a connection to another famous musician with the last name Nelson, you would be right: she’s Willie’s granddaughter. Nelson eschewed the more traditional route of aligning herself with the major players on Music Row and instead sought an independent producer who is a veteran of the rock/punk scene to get her start in the industry. Stressing the importance of playing with a band (“I don’t really have any desire to be a solo artist,” she says), Nelson says that they like to keep it simple: “We write songs we like, record them, make a video, then go out and play them for people.” Their full-length album, Don’t, was released in 2019, and their latest single, “Friend,” came out in 2021. Be sure to check out their fan favorite songs, including “Weed and Whiskey,” “Rebel Girl,” and “Moon Song” featuring Willie Nelson.
