BMI Indie Spotlight: The Linda Lindas

Posted in News on February 22, 2022

The Linda Lindas is a garage punk band who first played together as members of a pickup new wave cover band assembled by Kristin Kontrol (Dum Dum Girls) for Girlschool LA in 2018. Sisters Mila de la Garza (drummer, now 11) and Lucia de la Garza (guitar, 14), cousin Eloise Wong (bass, 13), and family friend Bela Salazar (guitar, 17) developed their chops as regulars at all-ages matinees in Chinatown before opening for riot grrrl legends Bikini Kill and architect Alice Bagg as well as the bands Best Coast and Bleached. Impressively, they were also featured in Amy Poehler’s Netflix film, Moxie. During the pandemic, the Linda Lindas self-released a four-song EP, made their own videos, and grew a following beyond Los Angeles, eventually going on to perform their song “Racist, Sexist Boy” for the Los Angeles Public Library in May 2021. Their first full-length LP, Growing Up, was produced by GRAMMY winner Carlos de la Garza (Mila and Lucia’s dad, Eloise’s uncle, and Bella’s “uncle”), who has worked with acts like Paramore, Bad Religion, Best Coast, and Bleached. The new record channels classic punk, post punk, power pop, new wave, and other surprises into catchy songs sung by all four members, each with her own style and energy. Standouts from the album include “Oh!,” “Growing Up,” “Nino,” and the studio version of the aforementioned “Racist, Sexist Boy.” Be sure to look out for Growing Up when it drops in April!
