BMI was tremendously saddened to learn of the passing of Tito Jackson, who died Monday at the age of 70. A founding member of the Jackson 5, Toriano “Tito” Jackson played in the legendary fraternal band during its most successful period, releasing several No.1 hits like “I Want You Back,” “ABC,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll be There,” among many others, on Motown throughout the 60’s and 70’s. The band signed to Epic Records in 1976, changed their name to The Jacksons and continued to produce hits like “Enjoy Yourself,” “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground),” “This Place Hotel” and “Can You Feel It.” In the wake of the Jacksons’ tremendously successful Victory tour in 1984, Tito Jackson became a session musician and record producer before launching a solo career as a blues artist in 2003.

During his illustrious career, Jackson was nominated for three GRAMMY Awards and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Jackson 5. He was named a BMI Icon, alongside his brothers, at the 2008 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards. He will be tremendously missed by his friends, fans and family at BMI.
