BMI Writers Make Huge Impact at Latin Billboard Awards

BMI is proud to congratulate its songwriters who were recognized at Thursday night’s Latin Billboard Awards, held at the Watsco Center in the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla., and broadcast on Telemundo. Throughout the course of the show, BMI writers repeatedly assumed the stage to collect coveted awards, most notably Luis Fonsi, who collected the Spirit of Hope Award, presented by Juan Luis Guerra, for his tireless humanitarian work on behalf of St. Jude’s Hospital. Horacio Palencia took home the prestigious Songwriter of the Year Award, while Jennifer Lopez won both the Social Artist of the Year Award and the Telemundo Star Award. Multiple winners included Wisin, who took both Hot Latin Song of the Year, Vocal Event and Latin Pop Song of the Year for his collaboration on Enrigque Iglesias’s “Duele el Corazón,” co-written by Servando Primera. Banda Sinaloense MS De Sergio Lizárraga collected Hot Latin Songs Artist of the Year, Duo or Group and Regional Mexican Song of the Year for “Solo Con Verte,” written by Palencia. Zion y Lennox earned Latin Rhythm Songs Artist of the Year, Duo or Group and Latin Rhythm Albums Artist of the Year, Duo or Group, and J Bavin, who won for Latin Rhythm Albums Artist of the Year, Solo and Latin Rhythm Album of the Year for Energia.

The festivities were hosted by Kate Del Castillo and Carlos Ponce and featured spirited performances by hitmakers from across the spectrum of Latin music. The evening served as a celebration of Latin pride and music, featuring a striking performance of “Despacito by Luis Fonsi and a heart-stopping rendition by Jennifer Lopez of her new Spanish-language single “Mírate.” Zion y Lennox closed the show with a rollicking reggaeton set including “Mi Tesoro” and an airing of “Otra Vez,” for which they were joined by J. Balvin.
