Workshops, conference and contest opportunities for songwriters and composers

Dean Dillon, Broadcast Music, Inc.’s 2013 Country Icon and prolific songwriter, along with BMI and other sponsors, will host the inaugural Mountain High Music Festival January 14-18, 2015, in Crested Butte, Colorado. The festival will feature a varied lineup of hit singers and songwriters, along with performances by up-and-coming writers. The schedule includes top BMI artists such as Robert Earl Keen and Lee Brice to impressive songwriters Nicole Gaylon and Brooke Eden. Dillon will also perform, along with Thompson Square, Due West, Sonia Leigh, Rodney Clawson and more. The festival is not only a chance for audiences to enjoy music that spans many genres, from country to Americana and pop, but also provides a fantastic opportunity for budding songwriters to continue to perfect their craft by working with some of the best in the business. Jason Blume Songwriting Workshop: Nashville

BMI’s popular Songwriters’ Workshop Series in Nashville is held monthly under the tutelage of hit songwriter and best-selling author Jason Blume.
When: January 6, February 24, March 17, April 14, May 12, 2015, 12:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Where: BMI’s Nashville offices (10 Music Square East, Nashville, TN)
Who: Aspiring songwriters
Application deadline: No application necessary, but registration is required.
Fee: Free to all participants

BMI 101 Workshop: New York

BMI 101 is a one-hour introductory workshop for writers and publishers, covering the role that BMI plays in the music industry, basics of performing rights, and becoming a BMI affiliate.
When: December 18, 2014, 12:00-1:00 p.m.
Where: BMI’s New York office (7 World Trade Center, 250 Greenwich Street, 30th floor)
Who: Songwriters and Publishers
Admission is FREE! RSVP IS MANDATORY, AS SPACE IS LIMITED. If you do not RSVP, you WILL NOT be granted access.

BMI 101 Workshop: Los Angeles

BMI 101 is a one-hour introductory workshop for writers and publishers, covering the history of performing rights, the origins of BMI, and the current role that BMI plays in the music business.

CONTESTS

American Songwriter Lyric Contest

The American Songwriter Amateur Lyric Contest takes place six (6) times per year in conjunction with each issue of American Songwriter published.
Fee: $15 per lyric
Who: Contest is open to entrants in all countries.
Prize: First place winner receives a first class Gibson Guitar and a Shure SM58 Microphone.

John Lennon Songwriting Contest

The John Lennon Songwriting Contest is an international songwriting contest launched in 1997.
Fee: $30 per song
Who: Contest is open to amateur and professional songwriters in any one of 12 categories.
Prize: Prizes are awarded for different levels of achievement, such as Finalist, Grand Prize, Lennon Award and Song of the Year.
