BMI affiliate, Paul Bley, one of the most inventive and original pianists of our time, passed away January 3 at the age of 83. A protagonist of non-repetition, Bley’s phrasing and harmony were uniquely adventurous and most certainly the hallmark of his career. Although he claimed to have never practiced or rehearsed, Bley was effortlessly deliberate in his delivery of the nonconforming sound that was all his own. He will be sadly missed by his friends and fans at BMI.
