BMI Musical Theatre Family Dominates 2011 Drama Desk Nominations

The musical theatre award season is in full swing, and BMI’s family of composers and lyricists, from young torchbearers to veteran game-changers, are earning recognition of jobs very well done. The recently announced list of 2011 Drama Desk nominees underlines BMI’s longtime tradition of cultivating and celebrating musical theatre creators: Nominees See Rock City and other Destinations, The Kid and In Transit were all born in the prestigious BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop.

See Rock City and other Destinations garnered a nomination for Brad Alexander in the Outstanding Music field, which is dominated by BMI composers. Sister Act’s Alan Menken, The Book of Mormon’s Robert Lopez, The People in the Picture’s Mike Stoller and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown’s David Yazbek will also vie for the Outstanding Music trophy.

The Outstanding Lyrics category is also brimming with BMI nominees: Jack Lechner for The Kid, Adam Mathias for See Rock City and other Destinations and Robert Lopez for The Book of Mormon. Lopez and Mathias will also compete in the Outstanding Book of a Musical field, along with Kristen Anderson-Lopez, James-Allen Ford and Sara Wordsworth for In Transit and Iris Rainer Dart for The People in the Picture.

Outstanding Orchestrations nods went to Jim Abbott and David Yazbek for Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, as well as Larry Hochman for The Book of Mormon. In the Outstanding Music in a Play category, Wayne Barker’s work for Peter and the Starcatcher, Kathryn Bostic’s music for Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, and Tom Kitt’s work for The Winter’s Tale were each tapped.
