BMI was asked to make a presentation at the Nightclub & Bar Convention and Trade Show held recently (3/7/16) in Las Vegas that gave bar and nightclub owners an inside look at the music licensing process and a better understanding of how they can legally use music in their establishments. BMI’s Dan Spears educated attendees on the Copyright Law, what constitutes a public performance and the role that performing rights organizations play in the hospitality industry. In addition, BMI award-winning songwriter George Ducas was on hand to provide insight into the crucial role that public performance royalties play in the life of songwriter and the positive impact they have on his ability to make a living writing music. Ducas has written numerous hit songs over his 20+ year career as a working songwriter and performing artist. The Texas native penned Sara Evans’ # 1 hit “Real Fine Place to Start,” as well as Josh Thompson’s “Won’t Be Lonely Long” and the Eli Young Band’s “Always The Love Songs”. The Nightclub & Bar Show offers industry professionals the opportunity to connect with suppliers, network with new businesses, gain critical skills to operate in the bar and nightclub industry, and discover new products. This year’s conference was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
