BMI Writers Take 58% of Billboard Latin Music Awards
BMI songwriters had a hot night at the Billboard Latin Music Awards, which aired live on the Telemundo network on April 24. The recording of mega-hit “Vivir Mi Vida,”performed by Marc Anthony, earned the singer five awards including Hot Latin Song of the Year, Airplay Song of the Year, Digital Song of the Year, Latin Pop Song of the Year and Tropical Song of the Year. The song, which spent 17 weeks at No.1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, setting the record for 2014, was co-written by BMI affiliates Bjoern Djupstroem (STIM), Bilal Hajji, Nadir Khayat (a.k.a. RedOne), Achraf Jannusi and Alexander Papaconstantinou (STIM). Other BMI contributors to songs that won for their recordings were Francisco Saldaña for “Limbo,” which was recorded by Daddy Yankee, who won Latin Rhythm Song of the Year; Guianko Gomez and Prince Royce for Prince Royce’s recording of “Darte Un Beso,” which won Streaming Song of the Year; and Espinoza Paz, who wrote the Regional Mexican Song of the Year, “El Ruido de Tus Zapatos” for BMI band La Arrolladora Banda El Limón De Rene Camacho. In addition to Prince Royce, multiple wins went to BMI affiliates Wisin & Yandel, Jenni Rivera, La Arrolladora Banda El Limón De Rene Camacho and Chino & Nacho.
The evening also exploded with notable performances, including a teaming up of Luis Fonsi and Wisin for a spirited rendition of Fonsi’s “Corazón En La Maleta.” Ricky Martin, Juanes and Chayanne also performed.
