BMI Joins USC Class Exploring the Impact of Current Trends in Latin Music on a Global Scale
BMI’s Krystina DeLuna was invited to be a guest-speaker at a special USC class devoted to the Latin music industry. Designed to provide an overview of the contemporary impact of Latin music in both the U.S. and Latin America, Professor Loren Medina’s class delves into the current surge in popularity of Latin artists in the wake of hits like “Despacito” and “Mi Gente,” and how these artists are infiltrating the mainstream via digital platforms while influencing and informing global popular culture. By researching major current trends and analyzing their effects, the goal of the class is for students to attain an in-depth understanding of the significance Latin music has achieved on a global scale.
For the session DeLuna attended, topics included the impact on artists and labels created by the shift from CDs to free digital streaming services, and how terrestrial radio is still extremely influential for regional Mexican music in the U.S.
