BMI Director, Writer/Publisher Relations Nicole Plantin recently welcomed Schoolboy Q to the BMI family. A member of the hip-hop group Black Hippy with fellow West Coast rappers (and Top Dawg Entertainment/Interscope label mates) Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul and Jay Soul, Schoolboy Q (@ScHoolBoyQ) is part of a fresh crop of MCs who are actively pushing the boundaries of rap. Influenced by Nas, Jay-Z, 50 Cent and the Notorious B.I.G., he paints a realistic picture and is unafraid to be hungry and vulnerable, as heard on his previous independent albums, Setbacks and Habits & Contradictions. His forthcoming major label release, Oxymoron, is one of the most anticipated albums of 2013, according to Complex and XXL magazines. Schoolboy Q is currently up for the Social Star Award, to be presented at this year’s BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards on August 22, 2013, in New York City. “As part of a collective of such talented artists, Schoolboy continues to be a stand out, holding his own not only amongst his talented crew but in the overall landscape of hip hop music,” said Plantin. “Schoolboy’s unique approach and perspective were noticed immediately on his collaborations with artists such as A$AP Rocky and via his multiple solo mixtapes, resulting in the steady growth of his fan base as well as increased anticipation for his upcoming debut album.”
