SXSW Indie Spotlight: SYML

While his alias – pronounced “simmel” – might be Welsh for simple, singer/songwriter Brian Fennell’s music is anything but basic. Written with just his voice, a piano, a guitar and his laptop in the basement of his home in Issaquah, WA, SYML’s songs are straightforward and personal, but the emotions his lyrics stir are far from elementary. The bare-bones arrangements and heartfelt subject matter are leant an extra level of singular intimacy by SYML’s distinctive voice, evidenced on singles like “Clean Eyes” and the haunting “Where’s My Love” from his first two EPs. Expect a full debut album from him this May. See more about BMI at SXSW.
