Veteran Dan Tyminski Leads BMI Charge in 2009 IBMA Nominations
BMI bluegrassers swept the nominations for the 20th Annual International Bluegrass Music Awards, slated for Thursday, October 1 at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. From Dan Tyminski to reigning Entertainers of the Year Dailey and Vincent, the nominee list is chock-full of esteemed sidemen currently gaining traction by fronting their own groups.
The Dan Tyminski Band leads the list with nine nominations, including Entertainer, Instrumental Group, Male Vocalist and Album of the Year. Along with fellow Union Station alumnus and BMI composer Adam Steffey, Tyminski formed the acclaimed Dan Tyminski Band, whose album Wheels rested comfortably atop the charts. An Instrumental Band of the Year nod reflects the group members’ individual chops: Steffey garnered a nomination for Mandolin Player of the Year, while band member Ron Stewart was tapped in both the Fiddle and Banjo categories.
Duo Dailey & Vincent garnered seven nods, including Entertainer, Vocal Group and Album of the Year for their latest effort, Brothers from Different Mothers. Dailey was also individually tapped for Male Vocalist of the Year—a prize he captured last year.
Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper follow Dailey & Vincent with an impressive six nominations, including Instrumental Group and individual nods for the instrumental supergroup. Longtime favorites Blue Highway, The Isaacs, Danny Paisley, Del McCoury Band, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice and Rhonda Vincent & the Rage all also secured four nominations each.
Influential troupe The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers will enter the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. Founded in 1938 by Ray Cline, the band enjoyed considerable success in the 50s and early 60s. Bluegrass genre-builder Hylo Brown will also be recognized with the IBMA’s prestigious Distinguished Achievement Award.
The 20th Annual International Bluegrass Music Awards will be hosted by Kathy Mattea and the legendary band Hot Rize. For a complete list of nominees and more information, please visit www.ibma.org.
