Ceremony Slated for May 18 in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES, April 18, 2011 – BMI will present its Richard Kirk Award for outstanding career achievement to David Arnold at the annual BMI Film & Television Awards, slated for Wednesday, May 18 in Los Angeles. Staged at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, the black-tie, invitation-only dinner will salute the composers of the past year’s top-grossing films, top-rated prime-time network television series and highest-ranking cable network programs. BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations Doreen Ringer Ross will host the ceremony.
The Richard Kirk Award is bestowed on composers who have made significant contributions to the realm of film and television music. As the 2011 honoree, David Arnold joins an elite list that includes Rachel Portman, Alan Silvestri, David Newman, Thomas Newman, Christopher Young, George S. Clinton, Harry Gregson-Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Michael Kamen, Mark Mothersbaugh, Danny Elfman, Alan Menken, Mike Post, Lalo Schifrin, John Barry and John Williams.
David Arnold’s mastery of traditional film composition spiked with cheeky pop irreverence has yielded scores for a diverse collection of films including James Bond installments Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough, Die Another Day, Grammy- and BAFTA- nominated Casino Royale, and Quantum of Solace, the Grammy-winning Independence Day, the 2000 remake of Shaft, Stargate, Zoolander, Godzilla, The Young Americans, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Changing Lanes, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and so many more, as well as BBC series Little Britain and Sherlock, and British mockumentary series Come Fly With Me. Arnold became go-to composer for marquee directors and producers including Danny Cannon, Roland Emmerich, John Singleton, Roger Michel, and Scott Rudin, most of whom called upon him for multiple projects. He has received an impressive 10 BMI Film Music Awards since 1995, and is the only composer since the late icon John Barry to score more than one Bond film. In his role as ambassador to Care International, a charity organized to fight global poverty, he travels to Care Projects around the world while raising funds and awareness, especially through his annual Concert for Care in London. Based in London, Arnold is now at work on Bond 23, slated for release in 2012, and was recently named Music Director of the Closing Ceremonies for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The ceremony will also salute BMI’s Academy Award-winning composers from the past year.
