From March 12-15, BMI hosted an exciting lineup of showcases, featuring rising talent in indie, hip-hop, Latin, pop, R&B, rock, country and everything in between, continuing our tradition of being the go-to source for music discovery. BMI was excited to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of its Austin office at the annual Howdy Texas party at Still Austin Whiskey Co. (440 E St Elmo Rd Suite F). The event, which was free and open to the public, featured performances from nine diverse Texas-based artists, including Alesia Lani, Farmer’s Wife, Nicky Diamonds, RUTHIE CRAFT, Shelby Stone, The Tiarras, West 22nd, West Texas Exiles and Midnight River Choir, with styles ranging from R&B, Americana and rock with western influences to cathartic grunge, Latin pop and that classic Lone Star sound. The Tiarras are a trio of sisters, Tori, Sophia and Tiffany Baltierra, with a Mexican American heritage who draw from a wide range of influences that reflect their upbringing. Weaving together elements of rock, Latin music, pop, soul, reggae and blues, the songs of the Tiarras are fueled by a passion for community and inclusivity, with tracks like “Soy Chingona” and “Let Love Free” gaining recognition on platforms like NPR World Cafe, Mitú, Grimy Goods, and Latin Alt. Powerhouse vocalist/songwriter/storyteller RUTHIE CRAFT came to Austin from her native Seattle to share her soul-bearing songs that blend elements of soul, rock and pop into a colorful mix that is simultaneously heartbreaking and optimistic. With several singles and multiple collaborations already under her belt, RUTHIE will be releasing her debut EP this spring.
Born in Dallas and raised in San Antonio, Nicky Diamonds honed his songwriting and performing chops from singing hymns in church, a foundation that informs his compelling blend of country, Americana and blues styles. Paired with his captivating voice and his rich gift for storytelling, Nicky Diamonds is steadily turning heads and winning over audiences.
First arriving on the scene in 2020 with a fierce creative drive and a chip on her shoulder, Shelby Stone has been steadily proving herself to be a fearless songwriter, punctuating her bold lyrics with a rock n’ roll rasp. Her debut single “Each Other” charted on 95.9 The Ranch’s Top 12 before it was even released, with heavy rotation, and ultimately reached #5.
The West Texas Exiles are a five-piece for whom the sound and spirit of their home state’s musical history is practically sacred. Influenced equally by the Flatlanders and Buddy Holly through Vampire Weekend and Jason Isbell, the Exiles put a modern spin on the classic Lone Star sound. They are currently recording and plan to release their debut album later this year.
Farmer’s Wife is an Austin-based quintet whose dreamy, emotive grunge rock evokes the rough edges and raw catharsis of the alternative rock era of the 1990’s. Onstage, a Farmer’s Wife performance is as likely to inspire frenzied moshing as it is introspective swooning for a star-crossed teenage romance, courtesy of vocalist Molly Masson’s powerful lyrics and passionate delivery.
With upbringings ranging from Georgia to California, West 22nd bonded in the face of sudden adulthood with songs about old relationships and new beginnings. Now together in the heart of Texas, this indie rock quintet brings their city of Austin, TX into the forefront of their energetic music and is inseparable from their must-see live shows.
Midwest-born, Austin-raised singer/songwriter Alesia Lani combines a richly distinctive voice with an electric performance style. Though steeped in southern soul, Alesia’s songs meld with multiple genres, seamlessly meshing elements of R&B, funk, rock and hip-hop together into a dynamic new sound that is beautifully reflected in her eponymous debut album, Self-Titled. She is currently working on her follow-up, which will explore lo-fi R&B later this year.
A chance meeting on a late-night float trip down the Guadalupe River that found four strangers suddenly harmonizing together led to the formation of the Midnight River Choir. Comprised of Eric Middleton (lead singer and guitarist), Justin Nelson (lead guitarist), Jeromy Yager (former bassist), and Mitchell Pyeatt (drummer), the four gentlemen suddenly realized the magic of their combined talents and began writing music, inspired by the fate that first brought them together. Ever since then, the band’s signature blend of intense, feel-good Texas groove has been drawing crowds, speaking volumes, and proving itself to be nothing short of a force of nature.

Over the course of three amazing days, the annual YETI Music Showcase, Presented by BMI at the YETI Flagship on South Congress (220 S Congress Ave) played host to eighteen diverse sets from emerging artists spanning the spectrum from psychedelia, introspective pop and contemporary country to modern folk, buzzy indie rock and punk thrash. The event also includes drink specials, food pop-ups and other surprises. The showcase was additionally sponsored by George Dickel Bourbon, Karbach Brewing Co. and Liquid Death.
Scott Ballew is a Texas-born singer/songwriter, filmmaker, and former football star. Ballew’s love for music stems from listening to Willie Nelson and Charlie Pride in his dad’s Ford Bronco as a child. Pulling inspiration from his life experiences, Ballew uses songwriting as an emotional outlet and survival mechanism. Ballew’s story is so compelling that a 2023 mini-doc, Leisure Rodeo, chronicles his journey. Joining albums Talking to Mountains and Leisure Rodeo, Ballew’s junior album RIO BRAVO is now available for pre-order.
Alisa Amador is a bilingual singer/songwriter known for her fusion of various music styles including Latin, jazz, funk, and alternative folk. With a personal mission to create honest, vulnerable songs, Amador’s sounds vary from heart-wrenching to dance-inducing all within one set. Amador has opened for artists such as Hozier, Brandi Carlile, Lake Street Dive, Madison Cunningham, Watchhouse, and Hiss Golden Messenger. Her debut album, MULTITUDES, will be out in June.
ALEC MEZA is a singer/songwriter from New Jersey known for his inventive sound that’s redefining the alt alt.hip-hop genre. MEZA’s love for music was heavily influenced by his drummer and DJ father, and he began writing and recording music at 14 years old. After years of creating demos, MEZA formed a band and opened for artists including PnB Rock, Ski Mask the Slump God, Wax, and Lupe Fiasco. MEZA released his debut album, Extra Virgin, in 2020, which blends rap, pop, and indie sounds through hits like “Hot Boy Summer” and “Pulling Petals.” MEZA is broadening his horizons from the tri-state area to festival stages and venues around the world, debuting his upcoming album, AH! REAL LOVERS!, later this year.
Vision Arcade is an Austin-based indie-rock band comprised of Max Robison, Rory Kendall, Connor Torres, and Evan Brock. Their unique sound blends rock, pop, and alternative music elements, drawing inspiration from artists such as The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, and Twenty-One Pilots. Vision Arcade released its debut single, "Afterglow," in 2019, followed by nine additional singles. The group’s debut album, due out later this year, is a collection of the band's experiences, thoughts, and emotions growing up in the information age. Vision Arcade toured with acts including COIN and Sarah and the Sundays, and their live sets are an immersive experience that leaves audiences wanting more.
Brainstory is a California-based trio comprised of brothers Kevin and Tony Martin (guitar/vocals and bass, respectively) and Eric Hagstrom (drums). Drawn together by a love of jazz, the group is known for signature sounds ranging from sweet, soulful slow tunes to psyche rock-tinted bangers to ballads with a nod to the smooth, jazzy R&B of the ‘70s. Brainstory credits their musician parents, household record collections, Chicano Batman bassist Eduardo Arenas, and Big Crown co-owner Leon Michels as major influences. Brainstory toured with singer Lady Wray and was featured on her Tiny Desk performance. In 2019, the group released its debut full-length album, Buck, produced by Michels, followed by the 2021 EP, Ripe. The group’s latest album, Sounds Good, is due out April 19.
Giovannie & The Hired Guns is a Texas-based band comprised of frontman Giovannie Yanez, drummer Milton Toles, bassist Alex Trejo, and guitarists Jerrod Flusche and Carlos Villa. Pulling inspiration from Southern rock and stoner metal to la musica norteña and Latin hip-hop, the group pushes the boundaries to forge an irresistibly gritty sound all their own. The groups first two studio albums, Bad Habits and Giovannie & The Hired Guns, drastically expanded their following, largely on the strength of tracks like “Rooster Tattoo.” After signing with Warner Music Nashville, the group released their third album, Tejano Punk Boyz, in 2022. Georgia native Tony Evans, Jr. is inflecting country music with his magnetic baritone and a sensibility that mixes contemporary ideas with classic stylings. Having first signed with a record label at age 12, Evans has long been cultivating his own sound, earning three million likes, and half a million TikTok followers along the way, and performing at classic venues like Georgia’s famed Eddie’s Attic, The Red Clay Music Foundry, Nashville’s Listening Room, and a debut at the legendary Bluebird Café.
An avid songwriter, Chloe Tang seized an amazing opportunity to showcase her potential as a singer and performer when she opened for pop star Dua Lipa in 2018 at a venue she previously worked security at just a few months earlier. Since that full circle moment, Tang has been writing and performing in Los Angeles and working independently with a host of rising songwriter/producers like Joahn Lenox, Shawn Wasabi and Chizzy. Specializing in emotionally expressive anthems and songs of sultry introspection, Tang’s amassed over eight million streams organically without any label support. She is also dedicated to advocacy for Asian-Americans, and routinely references her Chinese roots in her music and her image.
Nemegata is an Austin-based trio comprised of Colombian musicians Víctor-Andrés Cruz, César Valencia, and Fabián Rincón. Rooted in Latin American traditions, Nemegata is reshaping the boundaries of sound and rebelling against musical norms. The group draws inspiration from Colombian traditions—cumbia, bullerengue, gaita music, and Andean melodies—blending them with mind-bending ‘60s and ‘70s psychedelia from Africa, South America, and the Caribbean. The group released their debut album, Hycha Wy, in 2020, followed by a second album, Voces, in 2023. Filled with jungle echoes, eerie synthesizers, and psychedelic guitars, Voces pays homage to ancestral voices and the resilience of Colombian youth.
The Wolves of Glendale prove that humor and music can harmoniously coexist on stage. They have delivered five singles, including their hit “Olivia,” their debut single from 2022, followed up by “Vapin’ in Vegas,” “The Gym,” “Loud Ass Car” and “Just Give Me Cash.” The Wolves boast over 50,000 monthly listeners on Spotify with impressive streaming numbers and have also amassed over 50k and 125k followers on TikTok and Instagram, respectively, with those numbers climbing daily. Their self-titled debut album of all original music, produced by John Spiker (known for his work with Tenacious D) and Rian Lewis (notable for collaborations with Doja Cat and Ty Dolla $ign), dropped this January and is a celebration of their unique brand of comedy/rock-infused music.
A no-nonsense Nashville-based punk band with zero tolerance for exclusivity and apathy, Winona Fighter has gained a reputation for high-energy live performances that are an accessible and accepting space for all to experience. Having cut her teeth on the Boston punk scene, front-woman Coco has made it her mission to share the power of thrashable tunes, exposing them for all audiences to enjoy. Flanked by lead guitarist Dan Fuson and bassist/producer Austin Luther, Coco welcomes everyone to take part in the Winona Fighter moshpit.
Practicing a style that blends the best of the country honkytonks with a bold, psychedelic spirt, Nashville native Daniel Donato and his versatile touring band have their own unique sound that recalls sprawling Grateful Dead jams, expressing grooves that are deep, heartfelt and expansive but that will also prompt the swaying of hips.
Maddy Davis is a singer/songwriter and producer from the suburbs of New Jersey. Davis masters raw, emphatic indie rock through a pop lens, bringing an addictive angst to the forefront of her storytelling. Davis released her debut EP, MUD, in 2022, followed by Would You Object for a Happier Life? in 2023. She’s also opened for Leyla Blue, Gatlin, and Luke Wild. Jobi Riccio is a Colorado-born singer/songwriter pulling inspiration from icons ranging from Sheryl Crow to Joni Mitchell. Riccio blends the classic craftsmanship of her songwriting with modern indie-leaning production to create a sound that feels traditional and experimental all at once. Riccio released her debut EP, Strawberry Wine, as an ode to the women of classic country and bluegrass she grew up learning to sing from. wilt is a Los Angeles-based indie-rock group comprised of lead vocalist Chelsea Rifkin, guitarists Aaron Liebman and Andrew Vance, bassist Jake Shpiner, and drummer Dan Bermudez. The five-piece pulls inspiration from artists such as Radiohead, Hole, Weezer, and Alex G, with Chelsea’s vocals compared to Paramore’s Hayley Williams. In the year since releasing their debut single, “gwen,” wilt earned spots on numerous playlists, including Spotify’s New Music Friday, plays on influential radio stations, and an opening slot on tour with British group, Lovejoy. Their debut EP is expected to be out later this year, as well as a US tour with Remo Drive.
Chance Emerson is a singer/songwriter who pulls inspiration from his multicultural background and unique experiences from growing up in Hong Kong and Maine. Emerson is known for his writing and compelling brand of melodic, modern folk-rock with pop sensibilities. His first EP, The Indigo Tapes, climbed to #1 on the iTunes Singer-Songwriter chart, and his self-produced album, The Raspberry Men, received rave reviews from fans and the industry. Emerson released his second album, Gingko, in 2023, showcasing his intimate writing style combined with his increasingly robust and resonant voice. He’s collaborated with artists like Johnnyswim, Brett Dennen, Eli Young Band, Lawrence, Ripe, Blues Traveler, and Heart.
Zach Person is a singer/songwriter known for his contemporary, pop-rock approach to blues and American roots music. Person cites legends such as Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King, and Gary Clark Jr. as influences on his music. His self-titled debut LP garnered praise from audiences and notable industry press. Person’s highly anticipated second album, Let’s Get Loud, is set to be released in March of this year. He’s played with artists including Buddy Guy, Foo Fighters, and Anderson .Paak, and is currently touring in North America with plans to tour Europe in the summer of 2024.
Michigander is singer/songwriter Jason Singer, accompanied by his indie-pop band, consisting of bassist Connor Robertson, guitarist Jake LeMond, and drummer Aaron Senor. Michigander is known for eloquent songcraft, uplifting instrumentals, and plainspoken storytelling punctuated by alternative flare. The 2016 debut single “Nineties” achieved viral success, claiming spots on multiple major Spotify playlists. Michigander’s first two EPs, 2018’s Midland and 2019’s Where Do We Go From Here, have become fan favorites, with the latter’s standout single “Misery” surpassing 15 million streams. The 2021 EP, Everything Will Be Ok Eventually, received rave reviews from critics and fans, featuring charting hits “Let Down” and “Better.” Michigander released the latest EP, It Will Never Be The Same, in 2023 and is expected to release additional projects later this year. BMI was proud to present the BMI Songwriters Circle under the Revival Tent at Luck Reunion. BMI songwriters Tyler Halverson, Kade Hoffman and Harper O’Neill performed intimate renditions of some of their favorite songs and shared stories of the inspiration behind them.
Tyler Halverson is a South Dakota-native, known for his powerful guitar skills and unique songwriting ability. Halverson is making waves with his self-described “Amerijuana Music,” bridging honest storytelling with songcraft inspired by country powerhouses Garth Brooks, George Strait, and Hayes Carll as well as Boyz II Men, Taking Back Sunday, and The Used. Halverson gained popularity with a string of independent releases including “Beer Garden Baby,” “Mac Miller,” and “Your Bar Now.” Now, with his Atlantic Records debut singles, Halverson is eager to take the next step on this amazing journey.
Kade Hoffman is a singer/songwriter from the plains of Colorado, bringing new sounds to contemporary Western lifestyle. Hoffman is praised for his songs that are rich in both tradition and the youthful adventure that is growing up on the range. With singles like “Bonfire Blues,” “Hungover & Heartbroken,” and his latest release “Wanderlust,” Hoffman writes with wisdom and wonder, tackling the dark and bright sides of rural life.
Harper O’Neill is a Nashville-based singer/songwriter, praised for her powerhouse voice, musical versatility, and unique storytelling ability. Inheriting a love of music from her parents, O’Neill pulls inspiration from artists like rock-legends Rolling Stones and James Taylor, and iconic women songwriters, including Carole King, Susan Tedeschi, and Bonnie Raitt. After a viral TikTok performance, she signed a publishing deal with Jody Williams Songs. O’Neill released her debut album, Dark Bar Daisy, in October 2023 and recently toured with icons Abraham Alexander, Lainey Wilson, Corey Kent, and Ashley McBryde. Photo: Working Holiday

The BMI Brunch is always one of the most anticipated events during SXSW, and took place, this year, at Geraldine’s at the Hotel Van Zandt (605 Davis St). This two-stage marquee event featured the eclectic sounds of artists Ethan Tasch, Matilda Marigolds, Choszn, Kylie Frey, Swamp Dogg, Jhariah and many more. The BMI Brunch was sponsored by George Dickel Bourbon, First Horizon Bank, ONErpm, The MLC, Liquid Death, Texas Music Office, Austin Music Movement, and the BMI Foundation.
Indie folk artist Ethan Tasch has amassed over 25 million streams since 2020. His debut album Got Him! has landed him countless placements on Spotify playlists like New Music Friday, Lorem, and All New Indie. The focus track of the album, “Shell,” got him on the cover of New Music Daily and a feature on the Zane Lowe Show. Ethan has notably collaborated with artists like Felly, Jeremy Zucker, Boyish and Caleb Nelson (Mt. Joy), who co-produced Got Him! Ethan has supported artists like Spill Tab, Tiny Habits, Wallice, Charlie Cunningham, and Bea Miller.
Matilda Marigolds has been called New York City’s #1 Cowgirl, with a refreshing yet nostalgic sound that falls between Clairo, Imogen Heap, Amelia Moore and Phoebe Bridgers. As the daughter of a NYC-based drummer, it was almost inevitable Matilda would soon start to forge her own musical path. She is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist – including piano, bass, guitar, drums – as well as producer and engineer who now studies at Berklee College of Music. Prior to releasing her two latest singles, “Time 2 Go” and “Jesus Christ,” Matilda has been credited as the youngest Berklee Popular Music Institute Artist and was recently awarded Berklee’s Best New Artist (2023). Currently, she is writing her sophomore album and has plans to release a new EP, Hatchet, later this year.
Raised in Gravesend, a small town in Kent, England, Tamera was raised in a musical household, singing hymns for her pastor grandmother and recreational singer mother, who recognized and encouraged her talent at an early age. A steady diet of James Brown, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, and Missy Elliot helped inspire her burgeoning voice. Tamera’s life experiences can be deeply felt in L.I.T. (Lost in Translation), her debut, six-track EP. Heavily influenced by her rich heritage, she laces in the sounds of a Nigerian, St. Lucian and UK background flowing over afro beats, r&b, and hip hop.
Benjamin Walker is a Chilean singer/songwriter and author whose music draws on Latin American folklore, pop and indie folk. Beginning his career at the age of 21, Walker released his first album called Felicidad in 2014, earning him the 2015 Pulsar Award for Best New Artist. With his next album, Brotes, in 2017, he established himself with a nomination for Best Songwriter at the same awards, as well as a Latin GRAMMY nomination for Best New Artist in 2019. He released his third LP, Libro Abierto, in 2021, which featured collaborations with Vanessa Zamora in “Quiero Verte Hoy”; Silvana Estrada in “Días Que No Lloro”; and with the Argentine duo Perotá Chingo in “Octubre.” In addition to his native Chile, Walker has performed in various cities in Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Spain, Mexico, the US and the UK.
Baltimore-born singer/songwriter Ashley Kutcher has a lot to say. In 2019, she performed in countless bars while attending college for nursing. Gaining traction with original music online, she answered a TikTok comment with her song “Love You from A Distance,” which exploded to the tune of over 94 million Spotify streams, paving the way for her first EP, One Eighty, in 2021. In its wake, she sold out her first two headlining shows in New York and Los Angeles. In 2022 she followed up her breakout year with her sophomore EP Survive My Own Mind, highlighting the sensitivity in her writing and delicacy of her vocals. She then played for sold-out crowds on her second and longest-ever U.S. headlining tour. Ashley's debut album, House on The Water, just dropped in January, and is a return to her roots as an acoustic singer/songwriter, with standout singles “Boy from Carolina,” “Matchbox,” and “Favorite Color” fusing hard-hitting hooks to a more organic, country-influenced sound.
Choszn is a 21-year-old R&B singer/songwriter hailing from both Brooklyn and Miami with a deep reverence for soul and hip-hop. The son of a musical polymath who tragically passed when Choszn was just four, he channels his father’s virtuoso spirit through his guitar, piano, and drums as extensions of his soul. Choszn arrived on the word stage in 2022 upon contributing to the collaborative EP Hood Christmas Carols, a viral sensation that led to the songwriter landing a pivotal meeting with Kenyan “Ken Pen” Penceal, the visionary CEO of WilPen Entertainment. Recognizing Choszn’s talent, Ken Pen signed him, and he released his first official single “Diamond (I Need Love),” which garnered highly coveted support via Spotify and Apple Music.
Born and raised as country as it gets, Nashville recording artist Kylie Frey is a third-generation rodeo girl and Louisiana state goat-tying champion – and a rising star as genuine as her blue jeans. Sincere in her convictions and too real to dismiss, even for ardent country haters, her sound both typifies and transcends the genre. With her music she’s brings a timeless sense of authenticity back. Her Hell of a Life EP was released last December, followed by her latest single, “Miss Thang,” which dropped in January.
California-based singer/songwriter Baby Fisher grew up listening to Springsteen, emotional ‘90s rock and hip-hop and started playing guitar at 12. Four months after picking up the instrument, Fisher found himself gigging regularly at blues bars with studio musicians from the ‘60s and ‘70s who had played with luminaries like Elvis Presley and Etta James. From there, Fisher started writing his own songs about his unconventional path and his star-crossed love-life, hoping to connect and resonate with his listeners’ own experiences via posting his deeply autobiographical music on TikTok. Since then, a string of successful singles like “Don’t Cut Your Hair,” “Madonna,” “Sick of This,” and “ This is The End” have been doing just that with a vengeance.
Britti (aka Brittany Guerin) is a singer/songwriter and Louisiana native who puts a dreamy, contemporary spin on Southern folk-pop via a truly unique vocal style. After working in a New Orleans record shop and earning a degree in music performance from Loyola University, Britti’s big break came after she started posting videos online of her covers of songs by artists like Sheryl Crow, Lainey Wilson and the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, caching the attention of an A&R executive who helped set the wheels in motion. Auerbach himself stepped in to produce her debut album and help harness and showcase Britti’s remarkably unique voice. The album, Hello I’m Britti, was just released in February to wide critical acclaim.
Courtney Patton is a singer/songwriter and producer based in Fort Worth, Texas who plays a soulful take on classic country, Americana and folk music. She’s just finished her sixth studio album in Austin with plans to release later this year. Her songs fuse the power of lyrics, a healthy dosage of musical influences and narrative to build an incredible catalog of music.
Jerry Williams Jr., generally credited under the pseudonym Swamp Dogg after 1970, is an American soul and R&B singer, musician, songwriter and record producer who has been described as “one of the great cult figures of 20th century American music.” After recording as Little Jerry Williams in the 1950s and 1960s, he reinvented himself as Swamp Dogg, releasing a series of offbeat recordings, as well as continuing to write and produce for other musicians. He debuted his new sound on the Total Destruction to Your Mind album in 1970. In the 1980s, he helped to develop Alonzo Williams’ World Class Wreckin’ CRU, which produced Dr. Dre among others. He continues to make music, with most recent releases Love, Loss, and Auto-Tune (2018), Sorry You Couldn’t Make It (2020) and I Need A Job...So I Can Buy More Auto-Tune (2022). His newest album release on Oh Boy records is slated for May and promises bluegrass done Swamp Dogg style.
