History Maker ‘Give It Away’’ Takes No. 1 Spot

Posted in News on November 1, 2006
In the midst of a hectic award season, Music Row slowed down on Oct. 26 for a feel-good reception to toast Jamey Johnson and Bill Anderson, the BMI co-writers of George Strait's latest No. 1 hit, "Give It Away."

Johnson, an auspicious new voice in Nashville, and Anderson, a Country Music Hall of Famer and 2002 BMI Icon, paired with hit songwriter and producer Buddy Cannon to compose a heartbreak song in which the break is so bad, the girl doesn't want a thing back; in fact, she wants the narrator to just "give it away." The tune gave Strait his 53rd No. 1, officially making him the record-holder for the most chart-topping singles by any artist in country music history.
