June 21, 2010 BMI celebrated the legacy of the late Country Music and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer Harlan Howard with a #1 party of a different sort. Staged Thursday, June 17 at the organization’s Music Row offices, the event toasted the multi-talented—and multi-cultural—participants in recent AAA chart-topper “Kandi.” UK indie troupe One eskimO sampled the Candi Staton classic “He Called Me Baby,” written by Harlan Howard, to create the infectious “Kandi,” a combination of freewheeling cover, inspired original, haunting duet, and DJ-sampling savvy. Howard penned “He Called Me Baby” in the 60s, Staton recorded the song in 1971, and One eskimO’s struck gold with their adaptation this year. As a result, Howard has climbed charts each decade since the 1950s. Pictured are EMI Music Publishing’s Tom Luteran, One eskimO’s Adam Falkner and Pete Rinaldi, Harlan Howard Songs’ Melanie Howard, Candi Staton, One eskimO’s Jamie Sefton and Kristian Leontiou, and BMI’s Jody Williams.
