October 8, 2010 BMI hosted a champagne toast celebrating genre-defining songwriter Bobby Braddock on Tuesday, October 5. BMI presented more than 16 million performances’ worth of Million-Air Awards to the honky-tonk poet: “I Wanna Talk About Me” and “Time Marches On” have both surpassed 3 million performances; the iconic “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” “Texas Tornado,” and “Old Flames Have New Names” have each exceeded 2 million; and “People Are Crazy,” “D-I-V-O-R-C-E,” “Thinking of a Rendezvous,” and “Would You Catch a Falling Star” have each passed the one million-performances mark. BMI’s Jody Williams then informed the cozy room of friends and family that the honored performances would add up to more than 100 years of continuous airplay. After the BMI presentation, Sony/ATV Music Publishing’s Troy Tomlinson presented a plaque to the honoree recognizing a monumental achievement: Braddock is the only living songwriter to have penned #1 country songs in five consecutive decades.
